TITLE I TITLE I CURRICULAR TRIPS BOOKED THROUGH THE TRANSPORTATION DIVISION CURRICULAR TRIPS BOOKED THROUGH THE TRANSPORTATION DIVISION NEW NEW For all Title I funded trips booked directly with the District Transportation Services Division: The Title I Office will now review and approve these trips These trips must be submitted via the online system (https://achieve.lausd.net/Page/868) Attach a copy of the Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) page/SPSA Modification page specifically describing the trip destination Because of the online process, the trip must be approved by the school administrator at least 15 days before the trip date. No fax or hard copy requests will be accepted by the Transportation Division for trips charged to Title I. The estimated rates for buses through the Transportation Division are only an average cost, therefore schools should monitor their funds for curricular trips throughout the year to avoid a negative balance in Title I. Schools will not be allowed to book Title I funded curricular trips in the month of June through the Transportation Services Division. Schools will still be able to book June trips through the District s approved charter bus companies if: The trip is described in the SPSA The purchase was made on or before May 5th
TITLE I CURRICULAR TRIPS APPROVAL PROCESS Federal and State Education Programs (FSEP) reviews the field trip request including the required SPSA documentation School staff submits field trip request through the Transportation Services Division including an attached SPSA Plan Page or SPSA Modification Identifying the field trip location and purpose If approved by the FSEP office, the field trip request is processed by the Transportation Services Division Principal approves the field trip request

TITLE I CURRICULAR TRIPS SHOPPING CART Shopping Cart Orders must be in no later than May 5thand must be received by June 30th Title I Shopping Carts will require documentation to be attached to the order, including an SPSA page/SPSA Modification page and quote/invoice. If all required documentation is not included, your complete order will be rejected. TITLE I CURRICULAR TRIPS MOST FREQUENT REASONS FOR DECLINED TRIPS 1. 2. Missing SPSA Page/SPSA Modification Page Missing Signatures on SPSA Modification (SSC Chair, Principal, LD Title I Coordinator, LD Director) SPSA Page/SPSA Modification does not list the specific field trip site requested When the specific location is not identified, the SPSA Page/SPSA Modification does not list possible destinations that might be similar in purpose to the requested trip SPSA Page/SPSA Modification does not clearly establish how the requested trip supplements the core instructional curriculum for at-risk students The Requested Trip is not on the Pre-Approved Field Trip List and the required documentation is not submitted 3. 4. 5. 6.
SAMPLE A SPSA PLAN PAGE Curricular Trips will be provided ensuring our students have the opportunity to experience educational and academic enrichment destinations to supplement the core instructional program that are aligned with our vision and to improve academic achievement for participating students. Field Trips will include, Disney Concert Hall, Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific, Cabrillo Beach Marine Aquarium, Natural History Museum, La Brea Tar Pits, LA County Museum of Art, Descanso Gardens, Science Center, The Getty Museum, The Grammy Museum, Griffith Park Observatory, UCLA, Dodger Stadium, Staples Center, Angels Stadium, San Juan Capistrano Mission, Los Angeles County Fair. One Curricular Trip per grade level. All curricular trips are aligned to our plan in the areas of science, engineering, mathematics, and the arts. Question: Are there any trips that might need further clarification? Why?
SAMPLE B SPSA PLAN PAGE Curricular Trips will be provided to students in order to extend the curriculum for core content areas beyond the classroom. Trips will be aligned to the CCSS standards and the NGSS Science standards and will allow for teachers to plan for interdisciplinary projects for all grade levels. The trips will be to the following destinations: History (Estimated 4 buses) Asian Pacific Museum, Getty Center, Getty Villa, Los Angeles County Museum of Art Science (Estimated 4 buses) CA Science Center, Cabrillo Museum (marine science 11th, 12th), La Brea Tar Pits (8th) Question: If the school chooses to go on a trip to the Natural History Museum, what additional documentation will be required?
SAMPLE C SPSA MODIFICATION To add additional locations that students will go to that support the school s academic goals. This includes the Norton Simon Museum, Jet Propulsion Lab, and the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant. Trips to these locations provide additional support and differentiation to students struggling to meet grade level standards in ELA & Math. The Norton Simon is not on the Approved Field Trip List The classes attending are art classes in grades 6-8 Question 1: What should the school do if the trip is not on the approved list? Question 2: If the trip was scheduled for LACMA, which is on the approved list, would it be approved? Why? Question 3: Does the SPSA Modification explain how trips to the Jet Propulsion Lab and the Hyperion Water Reclamation Plant provide support and differentiation for students struggling to meet grade level standards in ELA & Math?
SAMPLE D SPSA PLAN PAGE Curricular Trips will be provided to students in order to extend the curriculum for core content areas beyond the classroom. Trips will be aligned to the CCSS standards and will allow for teachers to plan for interdisciplinary projects for all grade levels. The trips will be to the following destinations: English (Estimated 4 buses) Shakespeare Center of LA and Los Angeles Center Theatre Group, CSUN Performing Arts, Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum. Students will compare and contrast the literature of Shakespeare and others with live performances of the plays read in class. They will develop reading comprehension and listening skills, as well as experience what a time period performance would be like in terms of costumes and set d cor. When they return to their classrooms, students will debrief and discuss the performance and how it relates to the original text. They will write about their experience and use it to develop a greater awareness of literature and art. How is this sample different from the other examples?
SAMPLE E SPSA MODIFICATION Teachers are modifying their field trip list according to their units of Study for the 2017-2018 school year. Through these field trips students will be provided opportunities to develop experiences that build prior knowledge, background, and academic comprehension through school trips. The students will plan, read, write, and converse about the trip. They will apply skills learned in ELA and Social Studies class to real life experiences. Students will document their learning through journal writing and later use their findings for research based projects in meeting ELA standards. The buses will allow trips to : 1. Underwood Family Farms (2): Farm unit of study connecting life science with non-fiction text and real world experiences. 2. Kid Space (1): Physical and Life Science Unit of Study and linking non-fiction to real world phenomenon. 3. Autry Museum (1): Humanities Study centered on California and Native Americans making history and literature come alive. 4. Discovery Cube (2): Using physical and life science to link to non-fiction text 5. Los Angeles Zoo (3): Life Science Unit of study coupled with non-fiction text and real world experiences. 6. Chumash Museum (2): Social Studies and global humanities unit of study linking both non-fiction and fictional text 7. UCLA (3): Building bridges between higher education and literary connections to humanities and science. Question: What other information might be needed from the school?
SPSA MODIFICATION CURRICULAR TRIPS Evidence-based Strategies and the Action(s) Description of how each curricular trip will impact student achievement in the core subject areas that also includes: Identify the curricular trip destinations Identify the number of buses that will be purchased Identify the grade-levels/departments participating Identify and make connections to grade-level standards for each curricular trip destination How will the school measure the effectiveness How will the school measure the effectiveness of the Curricular Trips? WHAT CAN YOU DO? Support the development of a system for field trip requests at your school site Review the School s SPSA Plan to ensure that all Title I funded curricular trips are included in the plan Complete any necessary SPSA modifications through SSC in a timely manner if the field trip location is not identified in the SPSA plan Support your staff in using the Key Questions Guide when planning for Title I funded curricular trips Share the SPSA Plan Page/SPSA modification for curricular trips with your teachers or staff responsible for submitting field trip requests Work with your SAA/Financial Manager and principal to ensure that adequate funding is available for all field trips (remember that bus costs through the Transportation Division reflect an average cost and schools should monitor their Title I curricular trip budget regularly to avoid a negative balance)
