  2. What do you think we will be talking about today? Make a one word prediction.

  3. ENVIRONMENT

  4. Learning Target I can identify how the National Park System, the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA], and the Endangered Species Act were ways government takes a role in managing the environment.

  5. Environmental issues and government s role in protecting the environment. Think of three issues that pose the greatest threat to the environment.

  6. Look over the list of environmental problems facing us today. Pick 5 you would consider the most urgent and need to be dealt with. Arrange them in order of importance with 1 being most important. Be prepared to explain your choice for number 1

  7. The role of the government There is a growing belief among Americans that protection of the environment is a governmental responsibility. This is based on the realization that we all need to breathe clean air and drink safe water. Only the government is capable of managing these resources and preventing pollution since it has the ability to punish violators.

  8. Government decisions, however, are often linked to the costs involved: how much are Americans willing to sacrifice to protect their environment?

  9. National Park System 1916 Woodrow Wilson was a strong believer in protecting American s natural wonders. He established the National Park Service. It brought 40 existing parks and monuments under federal protection. The purpose of the National Park Service was to conserve the natural scenery, historic objects, and wildlife for the enjoyment of the American people.

  10. Environmental Protection Agency EPA 1969 Sets air and water pollution standards for cities, and engages in monitoring and enforcement activities. New construction projects must pass through detailed environmental impact reviews before being approved. President Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency in 1969.

  11. Endangered Species Act 1973 This law requires the Fish and Wildlife Service to list species of plants and animals that are threatened with extinction and then to take further steps to protect them. It was established by Richard Nixon in 1973

  12. EXIT TICKET Give an example of an environmental issue that needs attention. How does the government protect the environment now? ( notes ) Should the government be involved in protecting the environment? Does the environment need greater protection or is it already overprotected with too many regulations? Be specific, refer to what you have learned today.
