The Old Testament

The Old Testament tells the story of God’s relationship with the people of Ancient
Israel.

In the books of the Old Testament we hear the story of God’s love and care for his
people even when they ignored him and turned away from his commands. God
was always ready to forgive. He always found a way to show the people how much
he loved them. He continually sent leaders to remind the people of how he
wanted them to live. The stories of these leaders are told in the Old Testament.

The Old Testament contains four collections of books, known as the
Pentateuch,
the
 Historical Books,
the
 Wisdom Books
and

the
 Books of the Prophets
.

The Old Testament (continued)

The first five books in the Old Testament are known as the
Pentateuch
. In
them we find the stories of Creation, of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel,
Abraham, Joseph and his brothers, Moses and many others.

In the Pentateuch we also find the story of how God rescued the people of
Ancient Israel (the Israelites) from their slavery in Egypt and made them
the Chosen People. The Law books in the Pentateuch contain rules about
how the Israelites were expected to live and behave towards God and
others.

Jews call these first five books of the Old Testament the Torah. The Torah is
a part of their Sacred Scripture, which they call the Tanakh.

Ancient Israel. They include, for example, the Book of Ruth, the Book of
Joshua, the books of Samuel, the Book of Judges and the books of Kings.

The
Wisdom

Books
contains poems, songs, proverbs and other wise
writings. They include the Book of Psalms, which is full of hymns and
prayers of praise and thanks to God.

The largest section of the Old Testament is the
Books of the Prophets.
 The
prophets were people whom God sent to communicate his message. These
books include, for example, the writings of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Amos and
Micah.

Jesus and the Old Testament

Jesus was very familiar with the books of the Old Testament. He would have studied them as he
was growing up and he would have heard them read aloud in the synagogue.

Later, when he was teaching people about God and the Kingdom of God, Jesus would have
referred back to things that were foretold in the Old Testament, like the promise of a Messiah or
Saviour.

Jesus learned many things from the Old Testament. He learned about faithfulness from the story
of Ruth. He learned about obedience to God and courage from the story of Moses. He saw what it
means to be wise from the story of Solomon. The psalms taught him how to pray.
