Question
 – something that requires an
answer

to a question

The Nature of Questions

We are always asking questions
Some can be answered without too much difficulty
Some require more time and effort but do have an
answer
Some have more than one answer
Some questions do not have a definitive answer

Search for Meaning

Searching for meaning is a human characteristic
Human beings seek to discover the meaning of life,
why life exists, the purpose of living, etc.
The search for meaning is expressed in many ways,
including in art, music and literature

Meaning/Meaninglessness

Meaning
 – there is a reason or purpose to
something
Meaninglessness
 – there is no reason or
point to something

Finding Meaning in Religion

Religion gives people a view that things do
not happen by chance
Each religion has teachings, ideas and
beliefs that give people a sense of purpose
and meaning in life

Meaning found in Different Religions

Judaism
:
the relationship between God and people founded on the
covenant
Hinduism:
the ultimate source of all life, Brahman, the universal
soul
Buddhism:
the ultimate goal is for each person to achieve a
personal Nirvana or enlightenment
Christianity
:
God’s care for people shown through the life of Jesus
Islam:
the message of the Prophet Mohammad and the five pillars

Reflection

Reflection

means thinking deeply about something
Thinking about life, the meaning of life, why bad
things happen, birth and death, is a
reflective
 process
To reflect
means to meditate, consider and think
deeply about something

Awe and Wonder

Awe and wonder

means amazement and surprise at
something
People can be struck by a sense of how amazing
something is
This can lead them to reflect on whether there is a
reason or a purpose behind such things
In turn this can lead them to reflect on big questions
about life and the meaning of life
