The Joys & Dangers of The Joys & Dangers of Second Second- -hand Faith hand Faith Judges 4-5
Joshua 1:2 Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them to the Israelites.
Joshua 1:5-6a As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you. Be strong and courageous.
Joshua 1:8 Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it.
Joshua 24:14-15 Now fear the Lord and serve him with all faithfulness. Throw away the gods your ancestors worshiped and serve the Lord. But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.
Judges 2:7 The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua.
Judges 2:10-11 After that whole generation had been gathered to their ancestors, another generation grew up who knew neither the Lord nor what he had done for Israel. Then the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord and served the Baals.
Began a Pattern The people would do evil in the eyes of the Lord The people would cry to God for help The Lord would send a Judge to deliver them They would do okay for a while Then They would do evil in the eyes of the Lord etc.
Judges 21:25 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit. (NIV) In those days there was no king in Israel; all the people did what was right in their own eyes. (NRSV)
Note the Contrast The people did what was evil in the eyes of the Lord The people did what was right in their own eyes.
Judges 4:1 Again the Israelites did evil in the eyes of the Lord.
Judges 4:3 they cried to the Lord for help.
Deborah A prophet (4) leading Israel at that time (4) Settled disputes (5) Calls on Barak to gather an army (6)
Sisera Army General for King Jabin 900 chariots fitted with iron (high tech) Advantage speed and strength
Judges 4:8 Barak to Deborah If you go with me, I will go; but if you don t go with me, I won t go.
Judges 4:9 Deborah to Barak because of the course you are taking, the honor will not be yours, for the Lord will deliver Sisera into the hands of a woman.
The Battle Judges 4:15 At Barak s advance, the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and army by the sword, and Sisera got down from his chariot and fled on foot. Judges 5 (Poetic form of the story). God brought rain and chariots got stuck in the mud charioteers and Sisera run for their lives.
A Tent Sisera exhausted A woman Jael offers him a drink and rest Milk and a blanket Sisera sleeps The gory details Jael the woman who gets the glory
Joys of Second-hand Faith Joshua & Family committed to the Lord Grateful for parents and grandparents who served the Lord Great joy when kids and grandkids serve the Lord
The Dangers of Second-hand Faith The Lord never makes us follow Him a Choice Danger of claiming Christian because family is without actually knowing Jesus If we don t know Jesus More vulnerable to ways of the culture In Judges people only called on God when in big trouble but once out of trouble went back to old ways Judges describes military victory but not spiritual victory
REACHING THE NEXT GENERATION ALWAYS NEEDS TO BE A PRIORITY FOR THE CHURCH!
