The Inverse Relationship of Addition and Subtraction

LI: I understand that addition
and subtraction are the inverse
of each other.

LI: I can write inverse number
sentences

Addition and subtraction are
the opposite of each other.

3 + 7 = 10

10 – 7 = 3

We say that they are
inverse operations.
What would be the inverse of:
6 + 4 = 10

10 – 4 = 6

It is the same
numbers in a
different
order…
9 + 1 = 10

10 – 1 = 9
5 + 5 = 10

10 – 5 = 5
8 + 2 = 10

10 – 2 = 8
10 – 1 = 9

9 + 1 = 10
10 – 6 = 4

4 + 6 = 10

Remember
:

*An addition will become a
subtraction…
*A subtraction will become an
addition…
*You will have the same three
numbers rearranged in a different
order…

You are going to write
addition number sentences
and then write the inverse
underneath.

6 + 4 = 10
10 – 4 = 6

For example:

Plenary

11 + 9 = 20

13 + 7 = 20

20 – 5 = 15

20 – 8 = 12

Write the inverse
of each of these on
your board:
