The Theme of the Book of Romans Is JUSTIFICATION (1:16-17) The primary theme of the book of Romans: Justification is available to man only through obedient faith in Jesus Christ The gospel of Christ is God s plan (and only plan) for all men to obtain salvation from sins and to be accounted righteous in the eyes of God
SIN: The Need for Gods Righteousness (1:18-3:23) Chapter 1: The sinfulness of the Gentiles (and need of salvation) (1:18-32) Chapter 2: The sinfulness of the Jews (and need of salvation) (2:1-3:8) Chapter 3: The sinfulness of all mankind (and need of salvation) (3:9-23)
JUSTIFICATION: The Provision of Gods Righteousness (3:21-4:25) Through the cross of Jesus Christ, the merciful God provides the justification from sin that man so desperately needs (3:21-26) All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God (Rom. 3:23) The SCOPE of Justification: FOR ALL (3:21-22) The SOURCE of Justification: GOD & HIS GRACE (3:24) The GROUND of Justification: CHRIST & HIS CROSS (3:25-26) The REQUIREMENT of Justification: MAN S OBEDIENT FAITH (3:21-5:1)
SANCTIFICATION: The Effect of Gods Righteousness (5:1-11:36) Through the gospel of Christ: All men can have freedom from wrath (5:1-11) All men can have freedom from death (5:12-21) All men can have freedom from sin (6:1-23) All men can have freedom from the law (7:1-25) All men can have freedom from condemnation (8:1-39) All men can have freedom from their past (9:1-11:36)
SERVICE: The Fruit of Gods Righteousness (12:1-15:13) God provides very practical ways in which The just shall live by faith The gospel of Christ has direct application to the lives of God s people The Christian life is a transformed life, which touches every part of life A transformed life in our relationship with God (12:1-2). A transformed life in our relationship with ourselves (12:3-8) A transformed life in our relationship with our fellow Christians (12:9-13) A transformed life in our relationship with our enemies (12:14-21) A transformed life in our relationship with civil authority (13:1-7) A transformed life in our relationship with our fellow man (13:8-14) A transformed life in our relationship with weak (and strong) brethren (14:1-15:13)
