Supporting the LGBT+ Community in Family and Immigration Law: The Pink Law Project
The Pink Law Project, initiated in 2010, provides valuable support to the LGBT+ community in navigating family and immigration law matters. With services including letter writing, advice sessions, and information dissemination, the project has positively impacted over 260 clients. Through initiatives like Unconscious Bias training, the project strives to create a more inclusive culture within the QMLAC and Law School. While facing challenges such as low client numbers and financial considerations, the project continues to advocate for the rights of the LGBT+ community, making legal assistance more accessible and approachable.

The Pink Law Project Started in 2010 To support the LGBT+ Community in Family Law and Immigration Law cases. Letter writing, one off piece of advice. Information leaflets for Stonewall and Galop. 263 clients since we opened the clinic. Typical issues include: legal parenthood Vs PR, visa issues, civil partnerships, surrogacy, discrimination.

Culture The project has improved our culture within the QMLAC and within the Law School. Local LGBT groups within local boroughs. Demonstrate that we are a safe space (lanyards, signs, social media, active at events). We originally wanted to develop Pink Law Street Law. This ended up as the I Am You project in local primary schools. Made the clinic more approachable for LGBT+ clients in general. E.g. SPITE, employment, landlord and tenant etc.
Challenges / Considerations Low client numbers in the past year. Financial threshold of pro bono Vs specialist clinics. Specific social media or not? Requirement to have a member of the advising team as a member of the LGBT+ community? Name of clinic? constant consideration.
