  9. IHSA HATE SPEECH AND HARASSMENT POLICY The Policy was created to accomplish the following goals: Make a clear statement that the IHSA member schools do not tolerate hate speech. 1. Demonstrate the addressing hate speech or harassment is of critical importance. 2. Address the situation early so that it does not escalate into a worsening incident. 3. Demonstrate to the target and team that their concern is being hear and addressed. 4. Institute more severe consequences for the person who persist using hate speech. 5. Allow time for emotions to cool down. 6.

  10. HATE SPEECH AND HARASSMENT DEFINITION Hate Speech or Harassment is behavior aimed at a person s sex, gender identification, race, religion, creed, age, national origin, ancestry, pregnancy, marital or parental status, sexual orientation, or disability that substantially interferes with a student s school performance, or creates an intimidation, hostile, or offensive school environment Hate Speech and Harassment may be verbal, non-verbal, or physical acts during all competitions. This policy and procedure is deigned to provide a consistent framework for managing a contest in hate speech or harassment that is directed to toward a player by an opponent, coach teammate or spectator.

  11. POLICY AND PROCEDURE ADMINISTRATION When contest officials witness hate speech or an act of harassment by any individual associated with an IHSA contest, the alleged offender shall be penalized by an IMMEDIATE EJECTION. When a target is subjected to hate speech or an act of harassment and contest officials DO NOT witness the act, the target shall IMMEDIATELY inform their coach of the following at the next stoppage of action after the comment was heard: a) The specific comment made b) When and where the comment was made c) Identification of the alleged offender The head coach will immediately inform the official of the information above. 15. COMMUNICATION EXPECTATIONS From the Coach His/Her philosophy Expectations and Goals for the student athlete and the team Locations and times for all practices and contests Team requirements equipment, fees, training Procedure and protocol should the student athlete be injured during participation

  16. COMMUNICATION EXPECTATIONS From the Athletes / Parents Concerns expressed directly to the coach should come from the athlete first and then the parents Notification of any schedule conflicts in advance Notification of illness or injury as soon as possible Specific concerns in regard to a coach s philosophy and / or expectation

  17. GRANT ATHLETICS Athletic uniforms and equipment will be issued by the coach and must be returned at the end of the season. Failure to turn in a uniform and any equipment will result in an athletic obligation. All injured student athletes MUST report the injury to the athletic trainers, Mallory Whitman, within 24 hours of the injury, preferably as soon as the injury occurs for both home and away contests and practices. If a student athlete goes to a medical doctor for any injury or illness a written doctors note specific to that illness or injury must be provided to the trainer to clear that student athlete for practice or competition. We encourage our injured student athletes see our trainers first prior to going to the doctor. To practice each day or play in a contest on that day the student athlete MUST participate in physical education class, if enrolled. Athletes may not leave school during the day. A student athlete that arrives late to school will have their eligibility decided by the athletic director. Student athletes who are absent from school for reasons other than illness, will have their eligibility left to the discretion of the administration.
