  1. Using your Classroom as a Research Space CELT Workshop on Wednesday, January 12th

  2. Objectives Identify & begin to use strategies for using/creating teaching for scholarship Brainstorm, research, and/or design a possible SoTL project

  3. SoTL? Scholarship of Teaching and Learning

  4. Why SoTL? Reflection, reflection, reflection Evidence for making informed choices in your teaching Keeps us fresh in our teaching Pathway toward promotion This Photo by Unknown Author is licensed under CC BY-SA

  5. Methods for Using Teaching for Scholarship Write about your tweaks Revise a syllabus (write about the WHY?) Change an assignment (Write about the WHY?) Design a study Will probably need IRB

  6. Note about IRB CITI Training must be completed BEFORE you submit IRB Find it in the portal under Research and Scholarship tab To submit an IRB, you will need to create an account through www.irbnet.org

  7. How to engage in SoTL Look at the research. What does it say? How can you contribute to the research?

  8. How to engage in SoTL, cont. Begin with a research question(s), avoiding yes/no questions Can the quality and quantity on in-class discussions be improved by a preceding online chat or a discussion board? Vs. What do novice programmers think as they solve simple computer programs? (Bishop-Clark & Dietz-Uhler, 2012)

  9. Design the Study Things to consider . Will you need IRB? Will it be qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods? Write/design assessments, surveys, interviews, etc. How will you code/quantify findings? Who will participate? How will you share your findings?

  10. Collect the Data Data collection should be considered in the study design, specifically storage of data.

  11. Analyzing the data Analysis of the data should also be considered in the study design P-value? Coding? Triangulation? Look for themes

  12. Presenting/Publishing your Study See handout for a list of SoTL conferences and journals. Try a presentation and then use your slides to write an article.
