4th Year Planning Class of 2023
Session Objectives Students will be able to articulate the process associated with Visiting Student Learning Opportunities (VSLO). Students will understand considerations and planning needs for their 4th year rotations. Students will know the resources and best practices associated with planning their 4th year.

So What Does This Mean for You? It depends . What residency programs are you considering? Do they require audition rotations to interview? How many interviews do you need to be competitive for your specialty? Do you need more exposure to certain the specialty you want to pursue- will another rotation at another place give you that?
Important Dates Important dates in 4th Year June 2022- ERAS application opens September 14, 2022- ERAS application due*** October 1, 2022- MSPE and Transcripts due (usually uploaded before) January 2023- Student Rank List due February 2023- Program Rank List due March 2023- Match Day 2021 What does that really mean for you? Application and personal statement due to Dr. Proffitt by August 1, 2022. Level II completed by July. 4th year clerkships/auditions planned Application completed in small pieces when it opens in June.
How Do You Make a Plan? Planning Now: What is reasonable for you? Based on board scores Based on interests- electives in the program, research, etc. Goal of audition rotations in where you want to match based on the things that are important to you? Geography? Prestige? Previous AOA program? What programs are you interested in applying to? Make a list of 15 programs, ideally 30 programs 5-10 Reach** 5-10 Obtainable 5-10 I know I ll match
How Do You Make a Plan? Search now so you are ready when VLSO opens When VSLO Opens: Your top programs should be in multiple slots to make sure you get it- Slots 4-6. ** All rotations must be approved by the Office of Clinical Education to ensure they meet educational requirements.

Match Strategy Meetings Student meetings with Dr. Deel and Dr. Proffitt to discuss your intended ERAS application. Objectives of the Match Strategy Meetings: Students become aware of the process and preparation needed to successfully apply for the Match. Students acknowledge strengths and weaknesses of their application.
Match Strategy Meetings Students should do the following to prepare for Match Strategy Meetings: Prepare a list of programs for ERAS application according to their competitiveness and preferences within their speciality of choice. This includes: Board Scores Program characteristics Geographic Considerations Number of recommendation programs prepared: 10-15 Reach Programs- programs that are out of range of the student s board score, prestige of program or high level of competitiveness within the specialty or program 10-15 Mid-Level Programs- programs within the student s qualifications. 10-15 Safety Programs- Programs that are below the student s qualifications and can easily secure an interview. Understand and articulate interest in the specialty and the programs on their list. *** Safety programs are not transitional years at prestigious programs.***
