Fruit of the Spirit
(Love, Joy, Peace, Patience…, Self-Control)

We want to fulfill our needs through
our own strength & wisdom. We think
this way because of PRIDE – our
                    sin nature. (Only Christ
                       has the strength to
                 enable us to overcome
                 this.

God wants for us to thrust HIM to
provide for our needs, depending
on HIS strength &
wisdom. We can only do
  this in a personal
     relationship with Him.

It is
not
good for man to be alone…
(Genesis 2:18)

In our compulsive behaviors –
We
isolate
 from others
Behave badly & drive others away
Injure others so they draw away
When we overcome our compulsive behaviors
In healthy relationships – marriage, family, &
society: work & play & service to each other
We are free to love others above self
Even enemies & those who hurt us
Seek to constructively belong to communities
Seek to meet the needs of others with whom we
live in community.

When is it good to be alone?

When we need to meditate on God’s Word &
His will for us.
When we have healthy thoughts & good on
which to meditate & give thanks.
When we have a healthy relationship with God
When we are not stuck in our compulsions
When the world around us is chaotic & divisive
& hateful & distracting from walking in the
Spirit
Then we are not truly alone because the
LORD is with us
.

When we feel insignificant…

Psalm 144:3-4 –
O LORD, what is man, that You
take knowledge of him? Or the son of man, that
You think of him? Man is like a mere breath; His
days are like a passing shadow.
Our lives are short. After we die, others soon
forget. Our works are forgotten, become broken
down or obsolete> Who will remember in the 5
th
or 10
th
 generation? (see Ecclesiastes 1&2, esp
2:16)
God remembers every detail forever
God cares about you now
Jesus, God’s Son came to save you personally so
that you may live with Him forever
. (John 3:16)

When we have low self-esteem…

“But by the grace of God I am what I am…” (1
Corinthians 15:10)
God created me to do good works (Ephesians 2:10)
God has guided my steps in unseen ways to where I
am today & will continue to guide me to where I
need to be
I need to trust Him & do His will
1 Peter 5:6-7 – “
Therefore humble yourselves
under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt
you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety
(fearful cares) on Him, because He cares for you.

When we are seeking truth & wisdom…

John 14:6 – “I am the way, the truth, and the life – nobody comes to the
Father except by Me.” (Jesus Christ speaking)
James 1:5-8 – “
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives
to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him. But he
must ask in faith with no doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of
the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. For that man ought not to expect
that he will receive anything from the Lord,
being
a double-minded man,
unstable in all his ways.
Proverbs 24:13-14 – “
My son, eat honey, for it is good, Yes, the honey from
the comb is sweet to your taste;
Know
that
wisdom is thus for your soul
; If
you find
it,
then there will be a future, And
your hope will not be cut off
.
PROVERBS 23:23-24 Buy truth, and do not sell it, Get wisdom and instruction
and understanding. The father of the righteous will greatly rejoice, And he
who sires a wise son will be glad in him.
PROVERBS 3:3-6: Do not let kindness and truth leave you; Bind them around
your neck, Write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and
good repute In the sight of God and man. Trust in the LORD with all your
heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways
acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.

When we are hopeless…

Proverbs 24:13-14 – “
My son, eat honey, for it is good, Yes, the
honey from the comb is sweet to your taste; Know
that
wisdom is
thus for your soul; If you find
it,
then there will be a future, And
your
hope
 will not be cut off.
Romans 5:1:5 – “
Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have
peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also
we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which
we stand; and we
exult in hope
of the glory of God. And not only
this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation
brings about perseverance; and perseverance, proven character;
and proven character,
hope
; and
hope
 does not disappoint,
because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts
through the Holy Spirit who was given to us.
1 Corinthians 13:13 – “
But now faith,
hope
, love, abide in these
three; but the greatest of these is love.

We Need More Hope

Psalm 33:18-22 – “Behold, the eye of the LORD is on those
who fear Him, On those who
hope
 for His lovingkindness,
To deliver their soul from death And to keep them alive in
famine. Our soul waits for the LORD; He is our help and
our shield. For our heart
rejoices in Him
, Because we trust
in His holy name. Let Your lovingkindness, O LORD, be
upon us, According as we have
hoped
 in You.”
Without hope, people worry excessively about the future,
even neglecting what should be done in the present.
Without hope, people are often dominated by anxiety and
depression. Without hope, people become suicidal. True
hope in a person’s heart can resolve these issues.
Hope is a critical element of having faith, and faith is
essential for living confidently and purposefully

When we lack purpose & direction in
life…

Ephesians 2: 10 says, “For we are His (God’s)
workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good
works, which God prepared beforehand that we
should walk in them.”
Psalm 37:4-6 “
Delight yourself in the LORD; And
He will give you the desires of your heart
.
Commit your way to the LORD, Trust also in Him,
and He will do it. He will bring forth your
righteousness as the light And your judgment
(wisdom in what to do) as the noonday.”

Purpose & Direction

Most of us were asked, “What do you want to be when
you grow up?”
How many of us have developed aspirations to do
something or to achieve something or to be someone
set apart from others?
When did we start setting personal goals?
Perhaps we played on a team at a sport and really liked it &
desired to become REALLY good at it, but perhaps we were
merely mediocre and were always the last one picked for a
team.
Maybe you really liked & cared about animals & decided
you wished to become a zookeeper or a veterinarian or an
animal rescue person.
What placed this desire in your heart?
Did you pursue your heart’s desire?

Missing Fruit of the Spirit?

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Rejoice always
Pray without ceasing (but mostly listening &
believing)
In everything give thanks for this is the will of God
for you in Christ Jesus
Submit to Christ: “Lord, I can’t but You can,
take control (of me now), Thank You, Jesus!
Sing to the Lord in praise & thanksgiving
Keep it up! Persist! Believe!

The LORD wants you for His own.
He loves you.
Give yourself to Him – He will be
with you always, never forsaking
you.
He will provide for all your needs
if you submit yourself to Him.
