  1. REGIONAL REFEREE COMPANION COURSE Field Training

Assistant Referee Drills Training Process see slides Assistant Referee Drills A Position students along the touchline no more than 5-6 per exercise Other students should position behind the instructor & watch peers Rotate the group of students every 5-10 minutes all must practice Leave approximately 5-10 yards between them Instructor positions in front of the students to lead the exercise Students should move per the instructor s movement & instructions Start with having the students jogging back and forth Ask them to back pedal; side step; or sprint as they follow the instructor Keeping the flag on the side of the field when transitioning Stopping completely before signaling with the flag Making eye-contact with the referee before signaling Next, as they re moving up and down the touchline, ask them to signal: Throw-in (attacking team & defending team); Goal Kick; Corner Kick Offside (near-by; middle of field; far away) Mix the requests (verbal instructions) for about 3-5 minutes Provide direction to help the students learn correct signals

Referee Drills Training Process see slide Referee Drills A - Instructor yells GO! -- continue the process, having each student move through the Cones, 1 to 6 and back to the student group behind Cone #1. Slide Referee Drills A has the diagram that shows how to set up: 6 cones per the blue circles on the diagram. cones to be used for referee positioning; signaling; and use of the whistle. the first student to run through the drill, standing by Cone #1. the rest of the students; yellow circles with the letter S ; ready to take their turn, behind Cone #1. the instructors; red circle with the letter I ; providing instructions, guidance, and shouting Go! to start run to the next cone.

  5. Referee Drills Training Process see slide Referee Drills A Process One of the instructors explains the drill to all of the students. To demonstrate the drill, the instructor jogs through the 6 cones, blowing the whistle and signaling per the instruction at each cone. The signaling/whistles are: Cone 1 Kick-off signal and whistle. Cone 2 Foul for the attacking team with arm signal and whistle. Cone 3 Foul for the defending team with arm signal and whistle. Cone 4 Offside signal and whistle. Cone 5 Penalty Kick signal and whistle. Cone 6 Foul for the attacking team with arm signal and whistle.

  6. Referee Drills Training Process see slide Referee Drills A Repeat the process below and in the next slide until every student goes through every cone at least once. Ideally, students should go through the cones 2-4 times. As the students are going through the drill, the instructor(s) should be providing direction to help them learn correct signals and use of the whistle. Instructor providing the direction, yells GO! First student blows the whistle and signals a kick-off; then runs to Cone # 2; blows the whistle and signals a foul for the attacking team (in the direction of the arrow inside the Foul text box); waits for the next GO. 2nd student positions by Cone #1 and signals a kick-off; waits for the next GO! First student positions himself at Cone #1.

First student runs to Cone #3; blows the whistle and signals a foul for the defensive team (in the direction of the arrow inside the Foul text box). waits for the next GO. 2nd student runs to Cone # 2; blows the whistle and signals a foul for the attacking team (in the direction of the arrow inside the Foul text box); waits for the next GO. 3rd student positions by Cone #1; blows the whistle and signals a kick-off; waits for the next GO! Instructor yells GO! Continue the process, having each student move through the Cones, 1 to 6 and back to the student group behind Cone #1.

Referee Drills Stewards of the Game Teamwork Between Referees and Coaches Use role-play scenarios to give the students experience in: communicating with the coaches before the game starts. working with coaches in ensuring a safe field of play. - Instructor yells GO! -- continue the process, having each student move through the Cones, 1 to 6 and back to the student group behind Cone #1. working with coaches to address issues with spectators.

Referee Drills Stewards of the Game Communicating with Coaches Use role-play scenarios to give the students experience in: have short meeting with coaches from both teams before the game. introduce the referee team to the coaches from both teams. - Instructor yells GO! -- continue the process, having each student move through the Cones, 1 to 6 and back to the student group behind Cone #1. embrace the team concept to support each other as needed.

Referee Drills Stewards of the Game Discuss Safety Issues Use role-play scenarios to give the students experience in: the referee team checks the field for safety issues. communicate to the coaches any safety issues. - Instructor yells GO! -- continue the process, having each student move through the Cones, 1 to 6 and back to the student group behind Cone #1. work with coaches if needed, to address safety issues.

Referee Drills Stewards of the Game Issues With Spectators Use role-play scenarios to give the students experience in: asking a coach to manage an spectator(s). asking an spectator to leave the field if the coach needs help. - Instructor yells GO! -- continue the process, having each student move through the Cones, 1 to 6 and back to the student group behind Cone #1. team up with coaches as needed to temporarily stop the gam if an spectator(s) does not want to leave the field of play.
