Holy Communion and Passover
    For many Christians the
Holy Communion (or
Eucharist) is the most
important act of worship.
The word Eucharist comes
from a Greek word that
means
thanksgiving
’.
 The Holy Communion
remembers Jesus’ last
supper as recorded in
the Gospels. The final
meal was the celebration
of the Jewish Passover
or feast of the
Unleavened bread.
Watch the following film of the Last Supper.
Whilst you are watching make a note of the
things Jesus says to his disciples during the
meal.
Describe what the atmosphere like in that
Supper room?

What Happens Today?

During the service all share in the
bread and the wine.
This is a reminder to Christians of the
Last Supper, when Jesus ate with his
disciples for the last time, before he
was arrested and put to death.
Christians share bread and wine as
Jesus did with the disciples and
through this they feel part of the
last supper.

Beliefs about the Eucharist

Roman Catholics
 believe that the
Eucharist is so important that
they should make an effort to go
to church and celebrate it every
week. This is called going to
MASS
.

They believe that Jesus meant
his words:
this is my body, this
is my blood literally
, therefore,
the bread and wine
change
literally
 into the body and blood
of Christ, although they may look
and taste the same. This change
is called
Transubstantiation
 and
Roman Catholics say that they
believe in the
Real Presence-
that Jesus is really Present in the
bread and Wine!

Roman Catholics also believe that
Jesus gave up his life for us. This
is called a
Sacrifice
. He was put
to death to allow human sin to be
forgiven.

Roman Catholics believe that by
going to Mass every week they:

*strengthen their relationship
with God.

*they are united together.

*are given inner strength to live
according to God’s will.
