  3. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers What University Act says? According to Sec. 5 of the University Act: University is open to all irrespective of nation, caste and creed. No discrimination could be made on the basis of Gender (Male or Female) Religion Caste Creed Group Class

  4. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers According to University Act (Sec. 34): All teachers of the university will be employed for full time. University teachers will: Teach students through lecture, tutorial, discussion, seminar, practical demonstration and workshop. Conduct and/or supervise research. Make personal communication with the students, give correct guideline to them and supervise their activity. Help to accomplish academic and non-academic activities of the university, faculty or department; e.g. conduct of exam., script evaluation, evaluation of research material, library, laboratory etc. Conduct the activities and duties imposed by the VC, Dean and Head of the department as directed by the Statutes.

  5. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Is Teaching different/similar to other jobs? Let us consider the following points - Nature of job Working hour Responsibility Sincerity Dedication Honesty Respect Role Character Teaching profession is completely different from other jobs.

  6. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Role of Teacher Staff who teach in the university describe their role as: a guide to development of the subject expertise a mentor of intellectual development a role-model for the discipline culture. Which role is adopted at which time depends on the level of study. how we want students to develop and the type of teaching activities in which they are engaging. What colleagues say about the Role of Teacher - The lecturer-student relationship - "If you look at the Indian culture, technically our teacher is supposed to be as God for us

  7. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Characteristics of an Effective Teacher as identified by colleagues (a) Enthusiasm An effective teacher must be passionate about their subject. Only if you are enthusiastic will students have the chance to develop enthusiasm themselves. Dr Krishnasamy Selvan, Faculty of Engineering, The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (b) Interaction I like to ask students things that they will have an opinion on, things there's no right or wrong answer to, to encourage a dialogue between the lecturer and the audience. Dr William Bowden, School of Humanities

  8. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers (c) Research experience Someone who has direct access to research, so somebody who is teaching directly from their own experience is very valuable, I think. Dr Angus Davison, School of Biology (d) Clarity Teachers can be very effective by being very clear - making complicated concepts relatively straightforward without oversimplifying Prof. Peter Cartwright, School of Law (e) Inspiration An effective teacher is a facilitator who can encourage students to learn through a passion for knowledge, rather than the pressure of passing exams Dr Angelina Lee, Business School, The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus

  9. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers (f) Relevance I choose examples that are on their wavelength. So it's not something from a crusty old textbook from the 1960s, it's something they can engage with and see how it impacts on their own lives. Dr Louise Mullany, School of English Studies (g) Credibility Your credibility as a researcher is not necessarily known to the students, so your credibility grows over the semester according to the way you present the material and respond to challenges. Prof. Daniel Bernholfen, School of Economics (h) Respect Respect should always be at the heart of the whole. We're operating as a team - I feel very strongly about having this relationship. Dr Katharina Lomez, School of Humanities

  10. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Teaching Methods Research into higher education suggests that students learn best when they are actively participating, whether that be through focused listening, discussion, problem solving or explaining to others. 1. Lectures Large group sessions where the whole cohort come together. Students in the lecture theatre 2. 14. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Selection of Appropriate Teaching Method Number of things needed to be considered while selecting the best. Nature of subject Class level Number of students/class size Size of the classroom Resources available Class time Retention level

  15. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Limitations of Conventional Methods Teaching in classroom using chalk and talk is one way flow of information. Teachers often continuously talk for an hour without knowing students response and feedback. The material presented is only based on lecture notes and textbooks. There is insufficient interaction with students in classroom. More emphasis has been given on theory without any practical or real life time situation. Learning from memorization but not understanding.

  16. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Skills in the cognitive domain revolve around knowledge, comprehension, and critical thinking on a particular topic. Traditional education tends to emphasize the skills in this domain, particularly the lower-order objectives. There are six levels in the taxonomy, moving through the lowest order processes to the highest: Categories in the cognitive domain of Bloom's Taxonomy (Anderson & Krathwohl, 2001)

  17. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Characteristics of Good Teaching According to (Ramsden, 1992), the aim of teaching is simple: It is to make student learning possible. To teach is to make an assumption about what and how the student learns; therefore, to teach well implies learning about students' learning. At University level, we hope that students will provide their own motivation and their own discipline, and bring their own, already developed cognitive abilities to bear on the subject matter. Nevertheless, the teacher still has a crucial and demanding role to play in the process of student learning, by creating a context in which the students' desire and ability to learn can work most effectively.

  18. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Characteristics of good teaching Cont d: [Extracted from research studies and summarized from individual lecturer's point of view (Ramsden, 2003)] A desire to share your love of the subject with students. An ability to make the material being taught stimulating and interesting. A facility for engaging with students at their level of understanding. A capacity to explain the material plainly. A commitment to making it absolutely clear what has to be understood at what level and why? Showing concern and respect for students. A commitment to encouraging independence. An ability to improvise and adapt to new demands. Using teaching methods and academic tasks that require students to learn actively, responsibly and co-operatively.

  19. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Using valid assessment methods. A focus on key concepts, and students misunderstandings of them, rather than covering the ground. Giving the highest quality feedback on student work. A desire to learn from students and other sources about the effects of teaching and how it can be improved.

  20. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers The task of teacher in higher education has many dimensions: It involves the provision of a broad context of knowledge within which students can locate and understand the content of their more specific studies; It involves the creation of a learning environment in which students are encouraged to think carefully and critically and express their thoughts, and in which they wish to confront and resolve difficulties rather than gloss over them, It involves constantly monitoring and reflecting on the processes of teaching and student understanding and seeking to improve them. Most difficult of all perhaps It involves helping students to achieve their own aims, and adopt the notion that underlies higher education: that students' learning requires from them commitment, work, responsibility for their own learning, and a willingness to take risks.

  21. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Conducting Classes Does it need any preparation? Consider the teaching methodology Blackboard & duster Modern technology Cognitive or any other Management of Classroom The following tips could help to manage classroom: Give a clear idea about your course material, objectives, learning procedure and outcome in the first class. Introduce course plan and explain it to the students. While lecturing or asking question, roam around the class. Inform students regarding the rule for attendance. Let the students be cautious about it.

  22. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers While answering to any student, be sure that he understood you. Don t give wrong answer. If any class is missed, let them know why you missed it and how that could be compensated? If necessary change your teaching strategy. While teaching try to use known examples. Do not change routine frequently. In case of changes, evaluate student s opinion. Inform students about the availability of course materials. Be honest about your feelings, opinion and attitude while teaching. Don t fear to admit that answer to all questions is not known to you. Listen to student s comment and opinion. Instead of discarding their ideas, try to flourish them. If possible, call students by their names. This will improve the closeness between student-teacher.

  23. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Class Tests Arrange class tests through out the Term. Don t rush them to end of Term. Fix time within 20-30 min. and don t put too long syllabus for CT. Let the students be learned about their CT performance as early as possible and advise them how to improve. Ensure that students could not see their scripts each other in CT. Take Spot test or Quiz; give Assignments & arrange for class participation; Don t give marks only on the basis of Attendance. If necessary 4th CT can be taken. Submit numbers to HOD in time.

  24. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Student Advisor and their role: Every student is guided by an Advisor (not below Asstt. Professor) . They are nominated for the entire period of study by the DMC. The Advisor will: Advise each student on courses to be taken in a Term. Review and approve the student s specific plan of study. Monitor on subsequent progress of the student. Advise students to register courses during next Term within the framework of the guidelines in respect of minm/maxm credit limit. May advise student to change one or more courses among the offered courses based on student s academic performance. For student of 2nd and subsequent Terms, the type of courses for which he can register will be decided on the basis of his academic performance during the previous Term.

  25. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Paper Setter and Their Responsibility Normally, all faculties teaching any course, is the paper setter of that course. Must maintain confidentiality of this work. Question papers, marks, scripts and any other documents in connection with examination should be handed over personally to the Chairman of the Examination Committee. Not to keep any copy of the manuscript. Avoid such work, when close relatives are in that class. Avoid any religious issue while setting question paper. Avoid any major change of standard from year to year; also not set same type of questions every year. Questions should be so framed that there shall be no ambiguity as to their meaning. Questions should be set in such a way that originality and individuality of the candidates may be tested.

  26. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Candidates shall be allowed a choice of question to the extent of not more than 25% of the total number of questions set. Set paper such as the students can reasonably be expected to answer 6 questions within the allotted time. Make chapter-wise questions and try to cover whole syllabus. Write clearly and for any overwriting put your signature. Draw figures clearly and correctly. Don t put too many (say, a, b, c, d, e, f) in one question. Mention in manuscript if any Table or Chart is needed. Follow Bloom Taxonomy while setting questions. Avoid questions starting with what, which, define etc. Avoid questions like: What do you mean by ..? Put some questions to judge student s creativity.

  27. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Evaluating Answer Script Earlier each script was examined by two teachers separately. So, no mark was given in the script. If variation of marks was more than 20%, the script was reexamined by 3rd person. Now every part-script is examined by one teacher. So, any variation of marking could not be detected. Does it mean that the examiners are free? What we can do? Use red ink for marking answer script. Use underline/cross for wrong answer. Do partial marking with indication for wrong. Try examining similar questions all at a time. Put marks obtained close to the Q. No. For any correction in marking put signature.

  28. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Discard question with less mark when extra question is answered. Report to Chairman if answer of one part is written in other part. Post marks on top sheet properly. Convert total marks to next round figure & post it to marks sheet. Put sign on every script. Arrange answer script according to Roll before submission. Return top sheet with answer script. Return answer script in time for scrutiny.

  29. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Invigilation in Exam. Hall Try to stay for whole duration in the hall . Keep sharp eyes against copying in examination hall. Take necessary steps if such offence is taken place. Preventive measure is better. Students will be allowed to enter after half an hour. Take steps, if there is any correction/printing error in question paper. Take attendance of students; check their Roll No., Registration card & other information and Sign on their script. Make correction and sign it, if Sec A or B is interchanged. Supply necessary charts, tables etc. Supply duly signed loose sheet when necessary. Instruct students to write their Roll on loose sheet & also tell them to write the serial No. of loose on back of original script. Instruct/help students to staple loose sheet in time.

  30. Role and Responsibility of University Teachers Scrutiny of Answer Script Rules & Regulations for Conducting Examinations says: Every answer script should be scrutinized. Reexamination or reassessment is not permitted. Only omission or addition could be checked. Problems: Marks not posted in proper place Partial marking is not indicated Overwriting is not supported by signature Even marks given are sometimes confusing To do: Check whether all scripts are there or not. Check whether all questions are marked or not. Check the addition of marks with top sheet. If any mistake is found, correct it. If any question is found unmarked, consult with the examiner.

  31. Take steps when question of one part answered in other part. Check signature of examiner in each script and marks sheet. Put signature in each script and marks sheet as Scrutinizer. Check posting of marks in both copies of marks sheet. Make confidentiality.
