Rights and Responsibilities
6
6

Rights include:

To live in a fair and just society

Right to food

Right to clothing

Right to education

Right to freedom of speech
Be a Researcher

Investigate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This declaration
was drawn up by the United Nations in 1948 and it was a milestone in
human rights.
Find out what it says, how it came about and which countries have
signed up to it.
7
Rights and Responsibilities
8
8

Our responsibilities include following the rules at home, at school, and in the
community

To understand rights and responsibilities, you need to look at them from a
variety of different perspectives

Legal perspective
– Irish and European laws

Social perspective
– family, community and cultural background

Environmental perspective
– our effect on the planet

Ethical perspective
– what is morally right or wrong
9
Time to think

‘Students should be part of the decision-making process in schools.’

Write reasons for and against this motion.
Legal Perspective
10
10

Employers and employees have to follow laws

For example:

Laws governing the wage an employee receives

Legal right for an employee to receive a wage slip

Health and safety legislation

Right to be treated with respect and dignity at work

Employment, promotion and dismissal must be conducted fairly
and without discrimination
Be a Researcher
11

Find out what the minimum wage is in Ireland today.

What might happen if the minimum wage were increased?

Would it affect the government’s budget?
Social Perspective
12
12

Bullying, violence, destroying other’s property, and stealing do not respect
the rights of others

An organisation has a social responsibility towards its employees

An employer should:

Pay decent wages

Offer good working conditions

Consumers also want an
organisation to behave responsibly
Environmental Perspective
13
13

We have a responsibility to:

Share the planet with other living things

Make our world a cleaner and safer place for us all to live

We should try to:

‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’

Use
green energy
– wind, solar, sea energy

Reduce carbon emissions

Reduce pollution
Ethical Perspective
14
14

Ethics refers to
principles, morals, values and standards

Being
legal
 does not necessarily make something
ethical

We must consider the rights of
all
human beings – not just our
own rights

Culture impacts on ethics
