It is only when we have a proper view of the depths of human sin that we truly grasp the depths of God s love and grace.
How can a holy God dwell among sinful people? Only through God s gracious atonement.
How can a holy God dwell among sinful people? 1. God s holiness demands we approach God on his terms (vv. 1- 14) 2. God requires a substitutionary sacrifice that cleanses us from sin and removes our guilt (vv. 15-22) 3. Jesus is our Great High Priest who provides atonement for us.
What does this passage teach us about the nature of God and the nature of humanity? God is holy (Ex 15:11; Lev 21:8) Humans, as a result of the Fall, are sinful by nature (Rom 5:12-21).
What is the holiness of God? Exodus 15:11 Who is like you, O LORD, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?
Stephen Charnock As God necessarily loves himself, so he must necessarily hate everything that is against himself. God detests sin sin.
If God is holy and detests sin, do you detest sin in your life?
If youre not a believer in Christ, recognize that your sin stands under God s righteous judgement. Turn and trust in Christ today for the forgiveness of sin.
The Gospel in Leviticus Leviticus 20:8 Keep my statutes and do them; I am the LORD who sanctifies you. It is God who sanctifies.
2. God requires a substitutionary sacrifice that cleanses us from sin and removes our guilt. One single sacrifice with two aspects: cleansing and removal of guilt.
Why blood? Leviticus 17:11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it for you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement by the life. Blood represents the life.
Iniquities, Transgressions, and Sins Leviticus 16:21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over it all the iniquities of the people of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall put them on the head of the goat and send it away into the wilderness by the hand of a man who is in readiness. Exodus 34:6-7 6The LORD passed before him and proclaimed, The LORD, the LORD, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness,7keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children and the children's children, to the third and the fourth generation.
3. Jesus is our Great High Priest who provides atonement for us.
Jesus sacrifice on the cross is qualitatively better than the Levitical priestly sacrifices. Hebrews 9:13-14 13For if the blood of goats and bulls, and the sprinkling of defiled persons with the ashes of a heifer, sanctify for the purification of the flesh,14how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, purify our conscience from dead works to serve the living God.
Hebrews 10:1-4 For since the law has but a shadow of the good things to come instead of the true form of these realities, it can never, by the same sacrifices that are continually offered every year, make perfect those who draw near.2Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered, since the worshipers, having once been cleansed, would no longer have any consciousness of sins?3But in these sacrifices there is a reminder of sins every year.4For it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
Jesus all-sufficient once and for all sacrifice. Hebrews 10:14 For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.
Are you trying to wash yourself from your mistakes? Sin leaves a stain that no human effort can remove.
Christ has carried your guilt away. 2 Peter 2:24 Ps 103:12 Micah 7:19
