Background to Practice Education Roles Role of the PEF Practice Education Facilitator (PEF) roles developed in 2004 to support practice learning for pre-registration nursing in NHS areas across Scotland PEFs have a tripartite pay agreement with NHS boards, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) and NHS Education for Scotland (NES).

  3. Development of CHEF NES introduced the Care Home Education Facilitator role in 2010, to provide equality across practice learning environments who support pre-registration nursing students. CHEF role fully funded by NES CHEF numbers in each board determined by the usage of independent care homes as student placements in 2010

CHEF contracts Short fixed term funding contracts (1 year / 2 years) until very recently when they have been made substantive Negative effect on recruitment, retention and sustainability of the CHEF role Negative effect on collaborative working and project development Variable collaboration with NHS and HEIs

  5. Care Home Education Facilitator (C.H.E.F.) Our role: Support the education and development needs of staff to effectively support students in the care home setting. Contribute to quality of care provided for the older adult through sign posting practice learning opportunities for mentors and other members of the clinical team. Contribute to the skills development of new and experienced mentors and individuals in wider education support roles. Provide a link between Care Homes, National Health Service, Scottish Social Services Council, Scottish Commission for the Regulation of Care and Higher Education Institutions. Develop opportunities for partnership working improving the equity of the student learning experience Maximise and promote the Care Home contribution to the development and preparation of the future nursing workforce across sectors.
