SPORTS FAN SUMMARY This report examines the level of fandom or fan loyalty for a specific sport, for both college and professional. This does not include live attendance at games as the pandemic kept fans out of stadiums and arenas. The full data drills down into individual teams. Except for the NFL, most major professional and college sports are experiencing a 3-Year decline in preference. The NFL has been able to grow on a Y/Y and 3-year average change basis. The median age is skewing younger across the board. % of US pop. 13+ that attended or watched games/matches/races in past 12 months Median Age of Fans Total US (age 13+) 2019 36% 26% 24% 44% 34% 18% 10% Y/Y Change 3-Year Change Y/Y 2018 2019 2020 2018 37% 27% 23% 44% 35% 19% 11% 2020* 31% 25% 20% 45% 31% 17% 11% Change -1 -3 -6 -3 -4 -3 -3 MLB NBA College Basketball NFL College Football NHL MLS -13.9% -3.8% -16.7% 2.3% -8.8% -5.6% 10.0% -6.0% -2.0% -3.0% 1.0% -4.0% -2.0% 0.00% MLB NBA College Basketball NFL College Football NHL MLS 52 46 50 50 53 49 45 52 45 52 50 53 49 43 51 42 46 47 49 46 40 Gender of Fans 2018 2019 2020 Male 57% 60% 63% 55% 59% 65% 63% Female 43% 40% 37% 45% 41% 35% 37% Male 59% 60% 64% 55% 59% 65% 63% Female 41% 40% 36% 45% 41% 35% 37% Male 63% 63% 68% 57% 64% 68% 69% Female 37% 37% 32% 43% 36% 32% 31% MLB NBA College Basketball NFL College Football NHL MLS 4

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY - 1 Prologue In Q4 of 2020, SBRnet engaged Irwin Broh and Associates to conduct it s annual study of Sports Fandom here in the USA. For the past 10 years, SBRnet has asked consumers, 13 years and older about their level of fandom, engagement and interaction with their favorite professional leagues and teams together with college and minor league sports. In this year s version of the study, we made a decision to replace the section on live attendance at games and expand our understanding of: Sports Gambling, Fantasy Sports, E-Sports, Social Media Interaction and use of Streaming media. In 2020, the game has changed, and SBRnet gives you the new outlook and data benchmarks we all need to better plan and understand the future. This report titled, Sports Fandom in a Post Pandemic World , is a summary of just some of the findings from this comprehensive market research study. The challenges of 2020 have not spared any aspects of college and professional sports and what we looked at in terms of data from the past will no longer be the predictor of what we might be able to expect in the future. Sports Fandom Fan interest in College and Professional sports is a mixed bag. Those sports that were able to maintain an abbreviated regular and post- season faired the best in retaining the bulk of their fans. As an example, the NCAA totally cancelled their yearly celebration of College Basketball March Madness, aka NCAA Basketball Tournament saw a one-year decline just south of 17%, coming off a positive 1% gain from 2018-2019. On the positive side, the NFL that played the bulk of their regular season and conducted its playoff saw a 2.3% y/y increase in overall fan interest. Most sports are showing a younger movement for their median age of their fans which may serve as a positive sign in the future. Streaming Media Habits While there is no question that the growth of streaming media options has been good for sports in general, the situation created by the pandemic accelerated this trend. One of the key data points that stands out are the number of fans that used their smart TV s as their streaming device of choice. While usage rates have increased for all mobile devices people on lockdown gravitated to their TV s. The NHL and MLS enjoyed the biggest increase in streaming activity. 13
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY -2 Fantasy Sports Engagement Across the board, sports fans have shown a significant increase in participating in Fantasy Sports during the pandemic. This has reversed a downward trend in fantasy sports engagement and use. The Future of Sports Gambling No single topic has drawn more attention in 2021 than Gambling on Sports. Currently 19 States and the District of Columbia have approved betting on sports, an additional six states have approved gambling on sports but ate not yet operational. Another five states have filed the appropriate paperwork with their state legislatures and should be operational by the end of 2021. That leaves another 20 states without any sort of state sanctioned sports gambling. In spite of that some of the smaller or less popular sports like Ice Hockey and MLS took the place of some of the more popular sports when it comes to gambling on sports. It also appears that Sports Gambling might have a generational program as younger, Gen Z sports fans are not as inclined to gamble on sports. It might be a problem of education and bad messaging. Social Media Usage All social media platforms with the exception of YouTube benefitted from sports fans being on lockdown for the better part of 2020. Twitter and Instagram were the biggest winners, reversing a trend coming out of 2018 with sports fans. Who s Watching E-Sports During the great pandemic of 2020, we saw a huge jump in people moving away from watching their favorite traditional college and professional sports and move more towards watching E-Sports. Games like Call of Duty, Halo, Fortnite and Overwatch continue to lead the pack for these fans. Games focused on Sports like FIFA Soccer, Madden and NBA 2K are fan favorites. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY- 3 Epilogue Looking backwards to get a handle on what will happen in the future with respect to sports fandom and related categories is no longer an option. The pandemic of 2020 has erased what we all knew and now means we need to start looking at the present, to get any sort of an idea on the future. The data and insights presented in this report are just the tip on the iceberg when it comes to the level of data granularity. Much of the data is available via the Sports Market Analytics Data Platform powered by SBRnet.
