In this lesson on place value and rounding for Year 5 students, learners practice rounding numbers within 1,000,000. They are guided to round to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000, and make decisions on rounding up or down. The lesson includes ranking UK cities by population size, estimating London's population, and rounding city populations to the nearest 100,000. Through engaging activities, students enhance their rounding skills and apply them in real-world contexts.

The owner of the takeaway wishes to send a menu to every home in Swansea. The people who print flyers sell them in bundles of 10,000. How many lots of flyers will the takeaway owner have to buy? Why does this go against the rounding rule? Answer. Prove. Explain. The takeaway owner will have to buy 13 bundles, because he needs more than 120,000 flyers. It goes against the rounding rule, as he needs to round up, even though the digit in the thousands column is less than 5. thirdspacelearning.com Specialist 1-to-1 maths interventions and curriculum resources

When it is rounded to the nearest 10,000 it is 340,000. What could the number be? Answer. Prove. Explain. b) When a six-digit number is rounded to the nearest 100,000 it is 1,000,000. 21. 12/09/2024 Year 5 Place Value Lesson 10 Success Criteria: To be able to round numbers within 1,000,000 I can explain how to round to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000 Evaluation: Chen says, If the different between two three-digit numbers is four, and if when each number is rounded to the nearest 1,000, the difference between them is 1,000, the numbers could be 496 and 500. I can decide whether to round up or down when solving a problem in context Chen is correct. Why is Chen correct? Extension: Answer. Prove. Explain. Can you think of other possible solutions? thirdspacelearning.com Specialist 1-to-1 maths interventions and curriculum resources

  22. 12/09/2024 Year 5 Place Value Lesson 10 To be able to round numbers within 1,000,000 Success Criteria: I can explain how to round to the nearest 10, 100, 1,000, 10,000, and 100,000 Evaluation: Chen says, If the different between two three-digit numbers is four, and if when each number is rounded to the nearest 1,000, the difference between them is 1,000, the numbers could be 496 and 500. I can decide whether to round up or down when solving a problem in context Chen is correct. Why is Chen correct? Answer. Prove. Explain. Chen is correct as 496 and 500 have a difference of 4, because 500 496 = 4. Also, 500 rounded to the nearest 1,000 is 1,000, whereas 496 to the nearest 1,000 is 0, as it must be rounded down because the digit in the hundreds column is less than 5. So, the difference between the numbers when rounded to the nearest thousand is 1,000. Other possibilities include 497 and 501, 498 and 502, and 499 and 503. thirdspacelearning.com Specialist 1-to-1 maths interventions and curriculum resources
