Perimeter Calculation Techniques and Examples

WALT calculate perimeter

This is one way to work out the perimeter of a shape.

Answers – 1) 12cm

2) 12cm

3) 14cm

4)16cm

Here is another way of finding the perimeter of a 2d shape – this is especially important as you
may not always have squares to count.

Answers –Red square = 16cm

Orange rectangle = 20cm

Green triangle = 29cm

 Yellow square = 48cm

Can you name these shapes and work out their perimeter using the measurements given?

Answers – Blue hexagon = 42cm

Red octagon =72cm

And these ones?

Sometimes you may need to work out the perimeter of an irregular shape or a shape with a
missing measurement like the one below. To work out the perimeter of an irregular shape
you need to carefully add up the lengths of all the sides.
Look closely to see how you would work out what the length of a missing side is.

Answers – Red shape = 32cm

Green shape = 98cm

Purple shape = 148cm

Can you solve these perimeter word problems?

Answers – 1) 36cm

2) 16cm

3) 76cm
