The Weight
Crisis

What causes people to be
overweight?
What is “overweight”?

A condition wherein the person weighs
over and above his normal weight
according to his height, age and gender.
BMI (Body mass index) is between 25 and
29.9
What is Obesity?

Obesity means having too much body
fat.
It is not the same as being overweight,
which means weighing too much.
A person may be overweight from extra
muscle, bone, or water, as well as from
having too much fat.
Both terms mean that a person's weight is
higher than what is thought to be healthy
for his or her height.
How is weight calculated

For adults, overweight and obesity ranges
are determined by using weight and
height to calculate a number called the
"body mass index" (BMI).

Based on a child’s weight and age.
It is a comparison to the other children
that age.
Children and teens whose BMI-for-age is:
In the 95th percentile or higher are
considered obese.
Between the 85th and less than the 95th
percentile are considered overweight.
Between the 5th and less than the 85th
percentile are considered normal weight.
Below the 5th percentile are considered
underweight.
Discussion

How do you feel about BMI?
Do you believe in it?
What is good and bad about it?
Body Fat Percentage
The body fat percentage of a human or
other living being is the total mass of fat
divided by total body mass.
The percentage of essential body fat for
women is greater than that for men, due
to the demands of childbearing and
other hormonal functions.
The percentage of essential fat is 2–5% in
men, and 10–13% in women.
