He returned to England in 1756 and did odd jobs

In the opening scene, Mrs. Hardcastle is
complaining to her husband about the dullness
of the country life. She is dissatisfied with their
old rumbling mansion witch look more like an
inn. She does not like to be referred to as an old
wife. She bore her son Tony to her former
husband when she was not more than  twenty.
As Tony has not yet come of age she cannot be
more than forty. She is very fond of tony. Tony
is going to have fifteen hundred a year , she
thinks he can do without learning. As tony is
consumptive, she does not send him to school.
 
 
Hardcastle likes all that is old and he does not
want to change. He knows Tony to be
mischievous and feels that only ale houses and
stable are the suitable place for him.
Tony comes in and there is a tussle between the
mother and the son Tony runs off to the Three
Pigeons. His mother follow him. Then miss.
Hardcastle enters, prettily dressed. Her  father
tells her that in the evening his friend’s son
Marlow who is to be her husband, will call on
them.
 
He tells her that Marlow is a
handsome, generous well
bred scholar. He adds that he
is bashful and reserved. Miss.
Hardcastle  feels that it will
be hard to tackle him.
 
Miss. Neville is Mrs Hardcastle’s neice
.she tells more about Marlow ,the friend
of Hastings ,her lover she says that
Marlow feels embrassed in company of
virtuous and reputed womens ,but  is
free with women of lower order.Miss
.Hardcastle still more worried
 
Miss Neville
 is an 
orphan
 . Mrs
Hardcastle is managing her fortune for
the sake of his son ,tony though miss
.Neville is love with Hastings ,she
pretends to love tony ,which tony can
not bear .she says tony is very  good
natured and he wishes to marry anyone
except him

country life so she wanted
to marry Marlow also she
wanted Miss. Neville to

Tony precides at the inn ,the three
pigeons . He is with disreputable
friends . When she sings a  song
praising wine and condemning
learning and preaching ,he is
aplauded
 
comes in and announces the
landlord  arrival of the two
gentlemen who have lost their way
and who wanted be to directed to
Mr. Hardcastle’s house .he comes
forward to guide them but tony is
unable to say where is Hardcastle’s
house
 
The landlord confuses them by
giving uncertain directions tony
directs them to the inns called Buk’s
Head and the landlord tells them
that the Busk’s Head landlord is a
rich gentlemen who keeps good
wine and beds.
 
Marlow and Hastings
takes leave of Tony and
move towards Buck’s
Head ,without knowing
that it is Hardcastles house
