Overview of the NWO Talent Scheme Veni: for researchers who have recently gained their PhD (250K ) Vidi: for experienced researchers with several years of research experience (800K ) Vici: for researchers who have demonstrated the ability to develop their own line of research (M 1,5) For each funding instrument a funding round is held once a year. Rubicon:mobility grant

  5. Who can apply? Veni-applicants must have obtained their doctorate within the last three years. The 2019 Veni round is open to researchers who meet this criterion on 1 January 2019. Vidi-applicants must have obtained their doctorate within the last eight years. The 2019 Vidi round is open to researchers who meet this criterion on 1 October 2019. Vici-applicants must have obtained their doctorate within the last fifteen years. The 2019 Vici round is open to researchers who meet this criterion on 1 March 2019.

Who can apply? 150 Million euro annually Any place of origin All science disciplines Funding for your own salary, other staff (Vidi & Vici) and equipment For Veni & Vidi: embedding guarantee of an approved Dutch host institution One application per round Total number of applications Veni and Vidi max. two Vici max. three pre-proposals

  7. When to apply for Veni 2019? Veni full proposals: all domains: January 8, 2019 Eligibility reference date is 1st of January 2019. Deadlines are always Tuesday or Thursday, at 14:00 sharp

  8. When to apply for Vidi 2019? Deadline: October 3, 2019 No Cross-domain !! Eligibility reference date is 1st of October 2019. Deadlines are always Tuesday or Thursday, at 14:00 sharp!

  9. When to apply for Vici 2019? Deadlines: 1. Vici compulsory pre-proposal: 2. Vici full proposals: March 26, 2019 August 27, 2019 No Cross-domain !! Eligibility reference date is 1st of March 2019. Deadlines are always Tuesday or Thursday, at 14:00 sharp!

  10. Eligibility Formal Requirements and Criteria Do you meet the terms for submission? Are the right documents uploaded? Does your application follow the format and criteria (word and page limits, etc)?

  11. Extension regulations Max. extension of five years Care leave, Sick leave, Clinical specializations (list online) Extension clause parents biological mothers: extension of 18 months per child; other parents (fathers and non-biological mothers) extension of 6 months per child. Extension for parents is only granted for children who are part of the applicant s household. Consult the FAQ on the website Before submitting your application, you must contact the coordinator of the Talent Scheme to request an extension (vi@nwo.nl).

Embedding Guarantee Veni & Vidi Compulsory for all coming Veni and Vidi calls Veni: welcome guarantee Institution guarantees the candidate a working place and the required facilities in case of award; Vidi: researcher has a permanent employment contract or will be offered one if the Vidi application is awarded, researcher has a tenure track appointment or will receive if the Vidi application is awarded. If the tenure track ends during the Vidi research, will be offered a permanent contract Embedding guarantees must be signed by dean!

External Reviewers NWO selects external reviewers, using for example: Your abstract, your key words, your literature list, your CV (conferences) Google, Google Scholar, Web of Science, CiteSeerX (b ta), PubMed Directory of Open Access Journals, ReviewFinder Anonymous for the applicants and committee Conflict of interest is checked: think about professional relationships: supervision, collaboration, colleagues Code of Conduct on Conflicts of Interest (online) Max 3 Non-referees #ISAAC 5

  16. Rebuttal Responding to the (substance of the) external referee reports For committee only Is not sent to the external reviewer

Committee The Committee is responsible for: Preproposal selection/pre-selection Selection of applicants for interviews informed by external reviews 2-3 times the number of honorees are invited for the interview Interviews with applicants Measures are taken to avoid conflict of interest Committee is presented online at the end of the round

  18. Interviews Depending on # interviews several days/parallel sessions Invitation includes who is present at your interview Planning is fixed Information on the schedule in: Call for Proposals and letters from NWO Set up: brief presentation followed by discussion with the committee

  19. What are your chances? Varies between years and domains Veni (40 M euro): o 1150 applications o 150 grants (13%) Vidi (65 M euro): o 590 applications o 85 positions (14%) Vici (45 M euro): o 235 applications o 30 positions (15%)

Regular form: Science (ENW) & Cross domain; 2. Split form: ZonMw (part 1: Research proposal and part 2: CV & Output) 3. Pilot form: Social Sciences and Humanities & Applied and Engineering Sciences

  22. Veni 2020 Announcement and expectations No Cross domain in Veni 2020; Veni pilot expected to be continued in (at least) the domains Applied and Engineering Sciences and Social Sciences and Humanities; Setup will be fine-tuned, based on the evaluation of the current round.
