The healthcare system in Wales faces significant challenges in nursing workforce, with a substantial percentage of staff aging and a high number of vacancies. The sector also struggles with recognition, support, and retention issues, leading to a workforce crisis in social care. Recommendations have been put forth to the Welsh Government to address these critical issues.

Nursing in numbers (RCN Wales) 37% of the nursing and midwifery workforce aged over 50 62% of nursing staff in social care are over 46 years old 4% under 25 RCN estimates 9,744 NMC registered nurses living in Wales not employed in the NHS 1,419 Registered Nurses working in general practices in Wales 1,323 registered nursing staff employed in social care/care homes sector 17.7% of Registered Nurses in social care are non- UK EU workers 2,900* registered nurse vacancies (RCN Wales estimate) 133.4m NHS Wales spend on agency nursing (an increase of 41% from previous year)

Challenge - Workforce in crisis to lose people because they don t feel valued, they re tired, exhausted, they can get more pay around the corner- that s a travesty Association of Directors of Social Services (ADSS) Cymru hard to overstate the current workforce crisis in social care Care Forum Wales Providers have had to reduce their provision ..some have actually left the market ADSS Cymru essential that all social care workers are offered the same recognition, support and protection as NHS workers Welsh Local Government Association it's not just a crisis, it s a national emergency The Welsh NHS confederation

  6. Nursing in Numbers recommendations to Welsh Government 1. Publication of registered nurse vacancy data 2. Development of a national nursing retention strategy 3. Extension of section 25B of the Nurse Staffing Levels (Wales) Act to community nursing and mental health inpatient wards 4. Raise the profile of nursing in care homes and ensure equity of pay and terms and conditions 5. Develop a strategy for the commissioning of pre and post registration nurse education consulting widely with stakeholders
