NG-EPON Project Scope and Purpose at Huawei
This project focuses on amending IEEE Std 802.3 to enhance Ethernet performance in subscriber access networks. It aims to support high-speed data transfer and emerging bandwidth-intensive services while minimizing costs and optimizing equipment efficiency. The project also addresses the need to enable advanced telecommunications services in various environments, including subscriber access, back-haul, and multi-dwelling units.

Project Scope & Purpose NG-EPON www.huawei.com Author/ Email: Version: V1.0(20YYMMDD) HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.
Scope - Previous Projects P802.3ah: Define 802.3 Media Access Control (MAC) parameters and minimal augmentation of the MAC operation, physical layer specifications, and management parameters for the transfer of 802.3 format frames in subscriber access networks at operating speeds within the scope of the current IEEE Std 802.3 and approved new projects P802.3av: The scope of this project is to amend IEEE Std 802.3 to add physical layer specifications and management parameters for symmetric and/or asymmetric operation at 10 Gb/s on point-to-multipoint passive optical networks. Page 2 HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.
Purpose - Previous Project 802.3ah: To expand the application of Ethernet to include subscriber access networks in order to provide a significant increase in performance while minimizing equipment, operation, and maintenance costs 802.3av: The purpose of this document is to significantly increase performance of point-to-multipoint architecture (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) to support emerging bandwidth-intensive services while considering equipment, operation, upgrade, and maintenance costs. Page 3 HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.
Need - Previous Project 802.3av: The project is applicable to subscriber access, back-haul, and multi-dwelling unit environments. The project is needed to enable telecommunications operators and multiple system operators to provide advanced bandwidth-intensive services, such as high-definition television, while: reducing footprint and power consumption of central office equipment; minimizing service upgrade cost; and minimizing fiber deployment costs. Page 4 HUAWEI TECHNOLOGIES CO., LTD.
Proposal Scope: The scope of this project is to amend IEEE Std 802.3 to add physical layer specifications and management parameters for symmetric and/or asymmetric operation at least 25 Gb/s and at least 40 Gb/s MAC data rate on point-to- multipoint passive optical networks. This project will also define an extensible architecture that will support future higher MAC data rates of at least 100 Gb/s for Ethernet Passive Optical Networks. Purpose: The purpose of this document is to significantly increase performance of point-to-multipoint architecture (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) to support emerging bandwidth-intensive services while considering equipment, operation, upgrade, and maintenance costs. Proposal Need for Project: The project is most applicable to business access, mobile back-haul, and multi-dwelling unit environments. The project is needed to enable telecommunications operators and multiple system operators to provide advanced bandwidth- intensive services while: reducing footprint and power consumption of central office equipment; simplifying service upgrades and minimizing upgrade cost; and minimizing fiber deployment costs.
