  1. Section Number Section Number Syntax Syntax This new syntax will be used for curriculum class sections beginning 2021SU.

  2. Advantages Advantages Simple Five fields give visibility: 1stField: Location of class section 2ndField: Delivery method 3rdField: Length of class and sense of start/finish 4thField: Section count 5thOptional Field: Other specific info staff may need, ex. Independent Study/1stYear Experience, etc. Each field always contains the same information Contains students most needed info in 1stthree fields Interpretable by staff building sections Flexible

  3. Table of Options for Each Field Location P /M /T /O /W /L /N /5/ 6 /7 /8 Delivery Method C /A /S /M /T /F C= Classroom; 100% face to face (not separated by distance) A= Internet, Asynchronous: Learning is unscheduled (not simultaneous); apart from instructor's presence S= Internet, Synchronous: Learning is Scheduled/Simultaneous with instructor/class together online M = Internet, Mixture of Synchronous & Asynchronous Course Length A/B/C/D/E/G/H/J/K/N/R/S/U/Y/Z 1,2,3,4, etc Section Count Section Modifier Y/ F/ L/ E/ T/ N/ C/R/ V P= Polkton A= 16 week session 1=1st section of class Y=Degree in a Year B= 1st 8-week session or summer 8-week session M= Monroe 2= 2nd section of class F = First Year T= Tyson C= 2nd 8-week session 3 = 3rd section of class L = Open Lab O= Online D=1st 5-week session and so on E= Ed Stars T= Transitions between delivery methods F= Hyflex; Instructional method flexes with student's need W= Waxhaw E= 2nd 5-week session T = Test Out L= Wadesboro G= 3rd 5-week session N = Independent Study N = Off Campus 5 = Union Academy 6 = Anson HS 7 = Metrolina Christian Academy 8 = CATA H= 1st 4-week session J= 2nd 4-week session K= 3rd 4-week session N= 4th 4-week session R= 10-week session S= 12-week session U = other not listed Y= 14-week session Z= 1 week or less C = "Coreq-ed" w/Support Course R = Cross Listed, "Co-Sat" V = ITV Note: Section numbers for classes which are all online, either synchronous or asynchronous, will begin with O. Blended classes will begin with a letter indicating the physical meeting location, followed by S or A to indicate whether the online hours are synchronous or asynchronous. If a class begins online but will transition to the classroom in improved conditions, first field will be the physical meeting location after transition, followed by a T in the 2nd field.

  4. Examples: MC = at OCH and all seated instruction PA = at Polkton andincludes unscheduled internet instruction OS = Online and is all scheduled internet OA = Online and is all unscheduled internet TS = at Tyson and has some scheduled internet instruction 7C = at Metrolina and is all seated instruction MT = at OCH eventually and will transition from scheduled online to the classroom when appropriate OM = Online and a mixture of unscheduled and scheduled internet instruction So the 1st and 2nd fields work together; both are needed to interpret the section information.

  5. Note: Letters coincide with SPCC established mini-terms Examples: MCA = at OCH and seated, 16 weeks PAA = at Polkton andincludes unscheduled internet instruction, 16 weeks OSB = Online and is all scheduled internet, 1st 8 weeks OAC = Online and is all unscheduled internet, 2nd 8 weeks TSS = at Tyson and has some scheduled internet instruction, 12 weeks 7CA = at Metrolina and is all seated instruction, 16 weeks MTN = at OCH eventually and will transition from scheduled online to the classroom when appropriate, 4th 4 weeks OMC = Online and a mixture of unscheduled and scheduled internet instruction, 2nd 8 weeks

  6. Examples: MCA6C = at OCH and all seated, 16 weeks, section 6, coreq-ed w/support course PAA1 = at Polkton and includes unscheduled internet instruction, 16 weeks, section 1 (doesn t use optional 5th field) OSB1 = Online and is all scheduled internet, 1st 8 weeks, section 1 (doesn t use optional 5th field) OAZ1T = Online and is all unscheduled internet, 1 week or less, Test out TSA1L = at Tyson and has some scheduled internet instruction, 16 weeks, section 1, open lab MTA2R = at OCH eventually and will transition from scheduled online to the classroom when appropriate, 16 weeks, section 2, Cross listed co-sat OMC1 = Online and a mixture of unscheduled and scheduled internet instruction, 2nd 8 weeks, section 1 (doesn t use optional 5th field) Notes: For Test Out, Independent Study, ITV sections, or any section that utilizes the 5th field, populate the first four fields using the same criteria as a section without the 5th field. For example, if an ITV section is seated at Polkton, and is 16 weeks, use PCA1V; however, if it has asynchronous instruction in addition to seated instruction, use PSA1V. If an Independent Study section meets with the instructor at Monroe with independent online work for 16 weeks, use MAA1N

  10. Remember Begin with section location Add delivery method, indicating if section has any synchronous or asynchronous instruction, if it s Hyflex, or if it s intended to transition to the classroom Indicate the length of the class by mini-term in the third field, using U if your term doesn t match the ones provided If the first three fields are the same and more than one section is required, change the section count in the fourth field Use the optional 5th field if the section requires additional information For Help Contact: Carole Lynn Simmons Director of College Compliance csimmons@spcc.edu Or for a flowchart and other supportive documentation, go to: SharePoint Page at Academic Affairs Division>Shared Documents>Curriculum Course Section Guide

  12. Other Supporting Info for Staff and Faculty KEY: Instruction is delivered when instructor and student are separated by distance Instruction is face-to-face, with student and instructor not separated by distance TS, MS, PS TS, MS, PS C A S M TA, MA, PA TA, MA, PA Seated Internet Asynchronous Internet Synchronous Internet: Mixture of Blended Hybrid Sync & Async 100% Face to Face Unscheduled learning Scheduled learning </= to 50% separated >50<100% separated Not simultaneous Simultaneous Scheduled and unscheduled Traditional Delivery Methods relate to place, whether student and instructor are together or separated by distance: Seated is Classroom traditional; all face-to-face Internet Asynchronous indicates internet (separated by distance) Internet Synchronous also indicates internet (separated by distance) Mixed is instruction when student and instructor are always separated by distance, but includes both asynchronous and synchronous modes Delivery Modes relate to whether students and instructor are engaged in learning at the same time, and describe the Delivery Method. Synchronous: Students and instructor are engaged in learning at the same time; simultaneous Asynchronous: Using learning resources to facilitate information sharing outside the constraints of time; unscheduled Hybrid: instruction mostly separated (>50, < 100%) by distance (includes internet, LMS, video, TV, or other media) Blended: instruction containing some time (< or = 50%) separated by distance (includes internet, LMS, video, TV, etc.) and some time with instructor and student together
