Tuesday Busy at Maths Page 131 Please note, using actual coins will really help to reinforce the learning. When finding the change from a number, the children in second class do not cover subtraction with decimals. We change the to cent to complete the sum, e.g. 150 changes to 150cent. When taking away the change, our advice would be to break to the nearest 10. There are examples to explain what we mean on the next two slides:
Tuesday Busy at Maths Page 131 For example: If I had 1.30 and I spent 25 cent. I break 25 cent up into 20 cent and 5 cent. 1.30 is the same as 130cent. 130c take away 20c leaves me with 110c. So then 110c take away 5c leaves me with 105c. My answer is 1.05 or 105cent.
Tuesday Busy at Maths Page 131 Another example: I had 1.20 and I spent 68cent. I break 68cent into 60cent and 8cent. 1.20 is the same as 120c, so 120c take away 60c leaves me with 60c. So then 60c take away 8c leaves me with 54c. My answer is 0.54 or 54c.
Look at question 1. What coins do you see in the purse? Which coin is the biggest/smallest? What is the total value of coins in the purse? Count starting from the biggest coin to the smallest! What is the target number?
Use real coins to help you. Look at question 2 (a) How much money did you have at the start? What is the cost of the toy car? What change will you get from 1.50? How did you find out how much change you would get? We need to write this number in two ways. We need to write it as cent first then using the sign.
