Modesty in Biblical Perspective

Psalms 78:1-8
“And Husband”
“The Immodest Father”
The Immodest Father

In our society, immodest dress is a norm, sadly it has
become at the very least, not uncommon, among the
Lord’s people as well…
Two Reasons…
Biblical Ignorance…
Spiritual Apathy…
“Biblical Ignorance”
?
The Immodest Father

Biblical Ignorance…
1 Tim 2:9-10 “modest apparel”…
Modesty
We must make a distinction…
Indecency is always immodest…
Immodesty is no just indecency…
There are two aspects of modesty & immodesty…
Decent & Appropriate…
Indecent & Inappropriate…
The Immodest Father
Biblical Ignorance…
1 Tim 2:9-10 “modest apparel”…
Modesty
kosmios
- proper, suitable, appropriate, orderly (1 Tim
2:9-10).
Not just appropriate for the occasion but for our
purpose (1 Pet 2:4-9 Cf 1 Cor 6:20)…
The Immodest Father

The Biblical Concept of Modest And Immodest Dress
Indecency…
Adam & Eve (Gen 3:7-13,21)…
Before sin entered the world and their innocence
removed, they were not aware of their nakedness…
After they ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil they were aware of their nakedness and they became
ashamed (vs. 7)…
They sewed fig leaves together to cover themselves
They still believed they were naked and hid themselves
from God’s presence (vs.8-10 Cf Jn 21:7)…
The Immodest Father
The Biblical Concept of Modest And Immodest Dress
God’s Response (vs. 11-13)…
God clothed them modestly (vs. 21)…
He made them “coats/tunics”
kuttoneth
Called coats (Gen 37:3,23,32)…
Robes (Isa 22:21)…
Their fig leaves were insufficient!
The Scriptures gives a standard for modesty/decent and
immodesty/indecent (Ex 28:41-42 Cf Isa 47:2-3)…
(Jn 21:7)…
“Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he put on his outer garment (for he had removed it), and plunged into the sea.” (John 21:7 NKJV)
“Spiritual Apathy”
?
The Immodest Father

The Biblical Concept of Modest And Immodest Dress
Appropriate…
“In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in
modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not
with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array;

But
(which becometh women professing godliness) with good
works.”

(1 Tim 2:9–10 KJV)…
“For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in
your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

(1 Cor 6:20 KJV)
“But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people;
that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light:
Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; Having your conversation honest among the Gentiles: that, whereas they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they shall behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.” (1 Pet 2:9–12 KJV)
The Immodest Father

The Biblical Concept of Modest And Immodest Dress
It must be keep in mind that the New Testament challenges
the heart, in purpose and principle…
Direct/Commands…
Patriarchal “thou shalt or shalt not” 54 times] e.g. (Gen
2:16; 3:17)…
Mosaic [607 times: 229 are in Ex and 256 are in Deut].
e.g. (Ex 20:13-17)…
Christian [82 times: 63 are in the gospels and 19 are in
the epistles and 6 of those instances are referring back to
Old Testament passages] e.g. (Rom 13:9 Cf 10:9)...
The Immodest Father

The Biblical Concept of Modest And Immodest Dress
The New Testament puts our motives in check (Heb 4:12 Cf Matt
5:27-28)…
“For the word of God
 is
quick, and powerful, and sharper than any
twoedged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and
spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and
 is
 a discerner of the
thoughts and intents of the heart.”

(Heb 4:12 KJV)
“Ye have heard that it was said by them of old time, Thou shalt not
commit adultery:

But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a
woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in
his heart.”

(Matt 5:27–28 KJV)

Women were the main focus of the admonitions regarding
modesty in the New Testament (1 Tim 2:9-10)…
The Bible stresses that a woman clothes herself in a godly
way. Braided hair, expensive jewelry, and expensive clothing
is not what makes one modest any more than the removal of
the filth from the flesh makes one baptized (1 Pet 3:21).

Modest apparel - proper, suitable, appropriate, orderly…
With Shamefacedness, Propriety (NKJV), regard for
others, bashfulness, reverence…
With Sobriety, Moderation (NKJV)- soundness of mind,
soberness, self-control…
“The wise men are ashamed, They are dismayed and taken. Behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD; So what wisdom do they have? Therefore I will give their wives to others, And their fields to those who will inherit them; Because from the least even to the greatest Everyone is given to covetousness; From the prophet even to the priest Everyone deals falsely. For they have healed the hurt of the daughter of My people slightly, Saying, “Peace, peace!’ When there is no peace. Were they ashamed when they had committed abomination? No! They were not at all ashamed, Nor did they know how to blush. Therefore they shall fall among those who fall; In the time of their punishment They shall be cast down,” says the LORD.” (Jer 8:9–12 NKJV)

“Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty
judged of another
 man’s
 conscience?”

(1 Cor 10:29 KJV)
Displays an attitude of conformity to the world and it’s standard…
“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the
renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what
 is
 that good, and
acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

(Rom 12:2 KJV)
Is Sin!!!!
“The Immodest Husband & Father”
“But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”
                                                                    (Luke 12:48 NKJV)
The Immodest Father

Men (Husbands/Fathers) Are to Be Spiritual Leaders…
The head of woman is man (1 Cor 11:2-3)…
The Head of the Wife is the Husband (Eph 5:23)…
The Father is the Head of the Child (Eph 6:4 Cf Heb 12:9)
The Leaders of the local church are men…
Elders (1 Pet 5:2)…
Evangelist (*Ti 2:15; 1 Tim 4:6,11,15, 5:7,21; 6:2; 2 Tim 2:14). His authority
is in and with the word…
Every christian has some authority that they are subject too… (Christ,
Government, Husband, Father, Elders, etc)…
So why is there so much immodesty/indecency among the Lord’s people?

Whose adorning let it not be that outward adorning of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel; But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands: Even as Sara obeyed Abraham, calling him lord: whose daughters ye are, as long as ye do well, and are not afraid with any amazement… (1 Pet 3:1–6 KJV)
