Missouri Compromise
The Missouri Compromise of 1820 addressed the issue of slavery in new territories, maintaining a delicate balance between free and slave states in the United States. This compromise allowed Maine to enter as a free state and Missouri as a slave state, while establishing a line at 36°30' latitude to restrict slavery expansion. Despite being a temporary solution, it ultimately failed to prevent the Civil War due to unresolved tensions.
