Meet the Teachers at York River Academy

Meet the Teachers

YORK RIVER ACADEMY

Mrs. Collier

Teaches all of our Math classes—Algebra
through Trigonometry.
I wish I could clone Mrs. Collier so that every
school could have her for their students.
Whether you have been successful with math or
not in the past, it will be your favorite class at
YRA.
Her methods are varied. Although there’s a lot
of seatwork, you won’t feel like you’re sitting
still—this is not the notes and worksheet
approach you’ve had in the past.
There’s no homework, no math sets!

                                        Mrs. Collier with Talledega

Mr. Tremblay

Teaches all Social Studies classes: World History I + II, VA &
US History and Government
History can be fun and games! There are Kahoots
challenges, projects, movies, and more!
There are field trips at every grade level, including trips to
Richmond, DC, Yorktown, etc.
The VA & US History class maintains a Victory Garden
(pictured below) in the school courtyard.
The Hometown Heroes Vietnam project involves
interviewing locals who served and getting their stories.

Mr. Lorio

Teaches English—grades 9-11, always, and sometimes 12.
Lots of reading together and silent reading. Discussions and projects abound.
When Mr. Lorio teaches elective classes, they often focus on the art and design
of photography and videography.

Mrs. Warwick

Teaches Earth Science, Biology, Ecology, and
our local Greenhouse elective.
Such a creative teacher! So many labs!
Her teaching of genetics as a roll of the dice to
create monsters teaches the SOL-tested
vocabulary in a fun and memorable way. Her
lab to teach rock formation using chocolate
and other goodies is solid teaching and
delicious.
And many more…

Mrs. Wheeler

Teaches Computer Information Systems I
(9
th
 graders), CIS II (10
th
 graders), sometimes
Business Management, 21
st
 Century Themes,
or Design Multimedia (10-12), and
Economics/Personal Finance.
Mrs. Wheeler is energetic and enthusiastic.
She designs activities that students can
relate to and find to be fun in order to
strengthen students’ abilities with the
software she teaches.

Mr. Carpenter

Traditionally one of the favorite teachers at our school, he teaches
electives in technology: Computer Applications, Info Tech, Business
Management, etc.
He structures his class like a management team, starting out most
days with students gathered at a round table for discussion of
objectives and then moving out into application.

Mr. Acena

Teaches Technology electives:
Computer Applications, Info Tech, and
CyberSecurity.
Lots of hands-on learning including
computer repair (everyone tells me it’s
easier to take the hardware apart than
to put it back together again.)
Runs his classroom like a business with
students in support roles to the teacher.

One of Mr. Acena’s favorite places to hang out…

Mr. Cofer, Mr. Ritter, and Mrs.
Marinova
