Matthew's Revelation: Who Do You Say I Am?
In this passage from Matthew, Jesus questions his disciples about his identity, leading to Peter declaring him as the Christ. The significance of Peter being called "the rock" upon which the church will be built is explored, drawing parallels to Old Testament scriptures about foundational stones and the Lord as a stronghold. This narrative delves into the profound moment of recognition and declaration of faith in the divinity of Jesus.

The TITLE Matthew
Matthew 16.13 When Jesus came to the area of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people say that the Son of Man is?
Matthew 16.14-16 They answered, Some say John the Baptist, others Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.
Matthew 16.17 And Jesus answered him, You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah, because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father in heaven!
Matthew 16.18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Isaiah 28.16 Therefore, this is what the sovereign master, the Lord, says: Look, I am laying a stone in Zion, an approved stone, set in place as a precious cornerstone for the foundation. The one who maintains his faith will not panic.
Matthew 16.18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Psalm 18.2 The Lord is my high ridge, my stronghold, my deliverer. My God is my rocky summit where I take shelter, my shield, the horn that saves me, and my refuge.
Matthew 16.18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
1 Peter 2.5 You yourselves, as living stones, are built up as a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood and to offer spiritual sacrifices that are acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Matthew 16.18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overpower it.
Matthew 16.19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.
Acts 14.27 When they arrived and gathered the church together, they reported all the things God had done with them, and that he had opened a door of faith for the Gentiles.
Matthew 16.19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth will have been bound in heaven, and whatever you release on earth will have been released in heaven.
Matthew 16.20 Then he instructed his disciples not to tell anyone that he was the Christ.
Matthew 16.21-23 From that time on Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.
Matthew 16.21-23 So Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him: God forbid, Lord! This must not happen to you! But he turned and said to Peter, Get behind me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to me, because you are not setting your mind on God s interests, but on man s.
Matthew 16.24-27 Then Jesus said to his disciples, If anyone wants to become my follower, he must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
Matthew 16.24-27 For what does it benefit a person if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life? For the Son of Man will come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will reward each person according to what he has done.
James 5.19-20 My brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders from the truth and someone turns him back, he should know that the one who turns a sinner back from his wandering path will save that person s soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.
