  1. Math FIRS3T Gathering Fall 2015

  2. MAT 005 & MAT 010 - EdReady All MAT 005 & MAT 010 sections are now only offered in Math FIRS3T All MAT 005 sections are 8-weeks MAT 010 sections are either 5-weeks (paired with MAT 011) or 8-weeks 6 Units each with a Proctored Quiz (75%) and then a Cumulative Final Exam (70%) MAT 005 - No Calculator Permitted On Assessments MAT 010 - Calculators Permitted on Assessments Use Yellow Quiz/Test Work Record Students must get a 100% in EdReady before taking a Proctored Assessment EdReady grade can only be entered by the instructor or Nikki.

  3. MAT 011 Changes Sections 4.2, 4.3, and 4.5 (Solving Systems of Equations Algebraically & Problem Solving) have been removed and added to MAT 012. Course is now 10 Modules allowing for more time on Graphing and Factoring.

  4. MAT 012 Changes Additions Review Sections from MAT 011: Section 2.5 (Formulas & Problem Solving) Section 3.5 (Equations of Lines) New 012 Material: Section 4.2 (Solving Systems of Equations by Substitution) Section 4.3 (Solving Systems of Equations by Addition) Section 4.5 (Systems of Equations and Problem Solving) Deletion Section 7.6 (Proportions & Problem Solving With Rational Equations)

  5. MAT 012 Changes Continued Still 12 Modules Each Unit has 3 Modules Proctored Quiz #1 now in Module 1 Chapter 12 (Exponential and Logarithmic Functions) has moved to Unit 4 with Chapter 7 (Rational Expressions) Units 2 and 3 contain the same Chapters as last semester Rigor of the course has increased to include more challenging problems in the practice assignments and assessments in order to better prepare students for MAT 141/MAT 151

  6. MAT 012 Changes Continued MAT 012 Spring/Summer 2015 Continuing Students Continuing students will work in a MLP course using the content from Spring/Summer 2015. If you have a continuing student in your MAT 012 class, you will have two MLP courses for MAT 012 one for your continuing students and one for your new students. It is recommended that for students who have not passed the Unit 1 Test in MAT 012 to start over in the new MA T012 MLP course and consider testing out of Proctored Quiz #1. Remember to have the student print at least two copies of their gradebook. Notify Nikki continuing students ASAP, so she can create a Continuing MAT 012 MLP course for you. Students who are continuing from Spring/Summer 2015 MUST finish MAT 012 during Fall 2015. If they do not finish, they will be required to start MAT 012 over in Spring 2016.

  7. General MLP Changes Once in a MLP (or MML) course, the left navigation bar has changed due to a Pearson update. All of the Module buttons are still the same. Temporary Access The temporary access for students is now only 14 days BUT we are told that the 14 days starts when the student activates the temporary access by clicking Pay Later. This means, it should no longer be tied to the course start date. So, if you have a student who misses the first week, logs in to MLP on the first class on week 2, he will still have 14 days to purchase a full access code. No Major Policy/Syllabus Changes for Fall 2015

  8. MAT 012 vs. MAT 013A vs. MAT 013B What s with all of these courses??? Over the past few years, the math department has tried to accelerate the time it takes for students to get to their credit math class. As we know, MAT 012 has A LOT of algebra content that is not necessary for all of our credit courses. As a result, some of our students struggle. The solution? Let s create a version of MAT 012 (let s call it MAT 013B) that hits upon the important algebraic concepts of MAT 012 while preparing students for a non-Calculus based track.

  9. MAT 012 vs. MAT 013A vs. MAT 013B So wait Do you mean to tell me that a student has to take MAT 012 and MAT 013A/B? NO!! A student should take MAT 012 or MAT 013A or MAT 013B depending on the math required for their program of study.

  10. Developmental Math Pathways Option #1 MAT 010 MAT 011 MAT 012 Credit Math (preferably MAT 141/MAT 151) Option #2 (eligible students only) MAT 010 MAT 011 MAT 013A/MAT 141 Accelerated Int. Algebra paired with MAT 141 Option #3 MAT 010 MAT 011 MAT 013B MAT 100/133/135/221/222 Acc. Int. Algebra Non-STEM Credit Math

  11. Highlights of MAT 012 4 credit course designed for students progressing to MAT 141 or MAT 151 Course has become more rigorous in all course formats (lecture, hybrid, online, and Math FIRS3T) Which Students Should Take 012? Students in a program of study that require MAT 141 or higher-level calculus track course AND Students who received at least a C in MAT 011 or received an Intermediate Algebra placement on the Mathematics Placement Test Which Students Should Not Take 012? Students in a program of study that does not require MAT 141 or higher-level calculus track course Students who have been unsuccessful in MAT 012 previously (it is suggested that these students speak with an advisor about their program of study) NOTE: MAT 012 can still be used to meet the pre-requisite requirements for all of our credit level courses. Thus, if you have a student in your 012 class who does not need MAT 141 or higher course, he can still enroll in any credit level course once MAT 012 has been successfully completed.

  12. Highlights of MAT 013A 2 credit, 5-week lecture course (flipped classroom model) paired with a 10- week MAT 141 lecture course. Only offered as a paired course with MAT 141 Main purpose of the course is to provide a quick review of Intermediate Algebra concepts required to be successful in MAT 141 Which Students are Eligible to Take MAT 013A? Students who received an A in MAT 011 or students who receive an Intermediate Algebra placement on the Math Placement Test AND received at least a B in Algebra 2 in high school. Which Students Should Take MAT 013A? Students whose program of study requires MAT 141 or higher-level Calculus track course. AND Students who excel in mathematics, work independently outside of class, and/or need a quick refresher of Intermediate Algebra concepts. NOTE: Students who pass MAT 013A with a C or higher are ONLY eligible for MAT 141. These students cannot enroll in MAT 100/133/135/151/221/222 without approval from the department chair.

  13. Highlights of MAT 013B 2 credit course designed for students whose program of study requires MAT 133/135/221/222 or who only need a general education math course. Primarily offered in the Math FIRS3T format 5-week course paired with a 10-week MAT 011 8-week standalone course 15-week course paired with a 15-week MAT 135 Main purpose is to give an overview of Intermediate Algebra concepts necessary for their credit course. Course also includes supplemental topics specific to their follow-on credit course. Which Students Should Take MAT 013B? Students whose program of study does not require MAT 141 or higher-level calculus track course AND Students who have completed MAT 011 with a B or C or who receive an Intermediate Algebra placement on the Math Placement Test OR Students who have been previously unsuccessful in MAT 012 Which Students Should Not Take MAT 013B? Students who program of study requires MAT 141 or higher-level calculus track course. NOTE: Students who pass MAT 013B with a C are ONLY eligible for MAT 100/133/135/221/222. These students CANNOT enroll in MAT 141 or MAT 151.

  14. First Day Considerations Make sure your students are in the correct course! MAT 011/013B & MAT 013B/135 Does the student need both MAT 011 and MAT 013B or MAT 013B and MAT 135? In MAT 011/013B, sometimes a student only needs MAT 013B but signs up for both courses without realizing they are paired. This student should drop MAT 011 and sign up for MAT 012, 013A, or 013B depending on their program of study and eligibility. See below about needing MAT 013B In MAT 013B/135, sometimes a student only needs MAT 135 but signs up for both courses thinking he needs to take MAT 013B (even if he passed MAT 012). This student should drop MAT 013B MAT 013B Has the student already successfully completed MAT 012? If so, he needs to drop MAT 013B immediately, and enroll in a credit course Is MAT 141 (or higher) required for the student s program of study? If so, he needs to drop MAT 013B, and enroll in MAT 012. If a student is enrolled in MAT 011/013B, he can drop the paired MAT 013B, and try to complete both MAT 011 & MAT 012 in one semester

  15. First Day Considerations MAT 012 Does the student need MAT 141 or higher-level calculus track course for their program of study? If not, suggest that he meets with an advisor immediately to determine if MAT 013B is a better option Is the student continuing MAT 012 and is less than half-way through the course material? Determine if MAT 141 or higher-level calculus track course is required for their program of study. If not, suggest that he meets with an advisor immediately to determine if MAT 013B is a better option Has the student completed MAT 013A or MAT 013B with a C or higher? The student should meet with an advisor to determine which credit course he should enroll in NOTE: Prior to Fall 2015, MAT 013A and MAT 013B were known only as MAT 013.

  16. General Reminders Meet with students during each class meeting to check in on their progress and check their Note-Taking Guide How actively you engage your students has a direct impact on their success! Most enjoy talking to you Work with students to get back on track if they fall behind Have students write out their practice assignment problems on loose-leaf paper to build the mathematical foundation and study skills to be successful

  17. General Reminders Submit attendance after each class meeting in myAACC and deduct 5 pts from their Participation Grade for any student who missed class (for any reason) Submit 0 s in MLP for all assignments after a Drop Dead Date has passed Deduct 5 pts from their Participation Grade for missing a Drop Dead Date

  18. General Reminders Each faculty member (even adjuncts!) must spend one office hour in the lab for each Math FIRS3T course you teach. Please let Nikki know the time and location (Arnold/AMIL) of your office hour ASAP. Maintain Proctored Quiz/Test integrity when working in the lab. NO cell phones, smart watches, electronic devices, notes, cheat sheets, or talking to other classmates permitted If you witness an instance of Academic Dishonesty, you must notify the instructor immediately with the details of the occurrence (see documents in the Community Group for more details) If you haven t done so already, please send your availability to help during the first week of classes to Beth O Reilly (boreilly@aacc.edu)
