Managing and Preventing Diseases in Pig Farming
Proper temperature regulation, ventilation, hygiene practices, and feeding are essential in reducing the risk of diseases among pigs. Indoor farming allows control over these factors but also poses a challenge if diseases do occur, potentially leading to rapid spread and significant economic losses for farmers. Various diseases in pigs such as nutritional deficiencies, E. coli infections, SMEDI, PRRS, and PMWS have distinct causes, symptoms, prevention strategies, and treatments, highlighting the importance of proactive management practices in pig husbandry.

Diseases of Pigs
Diseases of Pigs In order to reduce the chances of disease there are 4 steps that can be taken: 1. Keep houses at correct temperature. 2. Have good ventilation to reduce humidity (pig houses should have extractor fans). 3. Maintain very good hygiene standards. 4. Feed the correct diet. Because pigs are reared indoors, all the above factors can be controlled which is a big advantage. The disadvantage is if disease does break out it can spread very quickly and be very serious. Disease is costing Irish pig farmers a lot of money at present.
