3. THE ESTABLISHED LEAVING CERTIFICATE WHAT IS IT? 7 Exam Subjects 3 Core Subjects & 4 Optional Subjects General Education Not a preparation for any one area of work 2 Year Programme

4. THE CORE SUBJECTS English Maths Irish All Offered at Higher & Ordinary Level. Maths & Irish also offered at Foundation Level

5. SUBJECTS OFFERED Accounting French Agricultural Science Geography Art History Biology Home Economics Business Music Chemistry Physics Construction Studies Religion DCG Engineering

SUBJECT GROUPS: Language Science French Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Agricultural Science Business Practical Creative Home Economics Humanities Business, Accounting Engineering, Construction, DCG Art, Music Home Economics History, Geography, Religion Along with English, Irish & Maths .. take 4 of the above!

7. HOW OPTION BLOCKS ARE FORMED Subjects are then placed in blocks based on the information gathered and the availability of resources Students are assigned to their choices. Most students will get their first three preferences Students are sent an online form to complete

8. WHAT IS A GOOD WAY TO CHOOSE? Keep options open. Consider subjects you are good at. Consider subjects you are interested in. Subjects required for the area(s) you are interested in. List in order of preference

10. WHAT YOU NEED TO CONSIDER BEFORE CHOOSING SUBJECTS? COURSE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS & COURSE SUBJECT REQUIREMENTS

12. IMPLICATIONS OF NOT TAKING CERTAIN SUBJECTS: If you do not have a subject that is deemed Essential for entry you will not get into that course. Example: H4 Chemistry for Medicine in UCC Please refer to Qualifax for details of this!! Students> Useful tools> Min. subject requirements> LC subjects

13. THE THIRD LANGUAGE We are not producing enough language graduates!!! All students take English and Irish (unless officially exempt) The Third Language= French for majority of students here. Can also be another language e.g. Spanish, Polish etc. Must be a recognised language by the State Examinations Commission- www.examinations.ie

WHAT COLLEGES REQUIRE A THIRD LANGUAGE www.qualifax.ie Students> Useful tools> Minimum subject requirements NOTE: If you have an official language exemption due to a diagnosed learning disability you do not need to worry about needing the second or third language. If you have an exemption Irish because you received your primary education outside the state you will need another language.
