Maintaining Catch Basins for Effective Drainage in New Orleans

What is a catch basin?

First point of contact with the
drainage system.
Collects surface runoff.
Can also be fitted to collect building
runoff through direct connections.
Usually designed to hold a limited
amount of debris in the bottom.

Why clean catch basins?

Excessive debris inside catch basins
can clog the outlets and eventually
the drainage lines.
Any debris that makes it inside the
catch basin will eventually make its
way to Lake Pontchartrain.
Debris can also cause obstructions in
box culverts, canals, and pumps.

How do you clean them?

Tools needed:
Gloves
Rake/shovel/broom
Waste container
Clear any debris in front of, and
within about 10 feet of the basin
opening using the rake, shovel, or
broom.
Be sure to remove any waste that
may be stuck in the grates,
especially the bottom ones.
Be careful of
sharp objects
 and
always watch for
traffic
.
Let our crews handle garbage or any
debris inside the catch basin. Do
not
attempt to lift the lid, clear surface
debris only.
Place debris in your garbage rollcart
for proper disposal.

How do you mark them?

Tools needed:
Gloves
Wire brush
Glue
Use the wire brush to prepare the
surface and sweep
all debris
 off the
top.
Starting 1/8
th
 inch from the outside
edge of the marker, apply a
thick
bead of adhesive and then work in
to the center in a spiral shape.
Apply the marker to the top of the
basin by pushing down
hard
, forcing
a little adhesive out around the
entire edge.
Give it a little twist to the right or left
to secure.
