  1. I put the sparkle in your spa. A well maintained spa provides well earned rest, relaxation and enjoyment but if not properly looked after, it can become contaminated with harmful bacteria and other organisms which can cause serious illnesses such as Skin, ear and eye infections. Gastrointestinal infections. Serious, potentially fatal respiratory infections such as Legionnaires Disease. Infections of the central nervous system. The young, the elderly and the immunocompromised are at particular risk of contracting these diseases. The most commonly contracted diseases in spa baths are caused by Legionella bacteria, E. coli (Escherichia coli) and Staphylococcus aureus infection (aka staph or golden staph) that has been left to multiply in the jets, pipes and pumps if biofilm (slimy growths of bacteria, algae and fungi) is allowed to form. Spas require diligent maintenance, sanitising and frequent cleaning because the warm water is ideal conditions for bacterial growth. It is also important to understand that spas also generate aerosols (tiny airborne water droplets) that can be inhaled. It is really important to clean and sanitise your system properly. Fortunately, the chance of becoming ill after using a spa can be eliminated by implementing the PDS SpaKling system. The Health Department highly recommend treating your spas after every single guest checkout. This is your duty of care. Here is a thought that ALL XO2 team and family members have when they look at a spa bath in any environment. This thought is contagious and so now you have caught it :) Who was last in this spa and did they have any illness or open wounds? And when was the last time this spa was properly cleaned, sanitised and treated? If you are wise, you will pass on having the spa. If you are providing accommodation services, you don t want your guests thinking this, which they are. So it is important to properly treat your spas and communicate it like we recommend with the PDS SpaKling security seal. Failure to do this will surely result in bad reviews and low retention and referral rates. PDS SpaKling has been cleverly formulated to provide wide spectrum antimicrobial and anti-bacterial performance. It is designed to effectively and hygienically clean spa baths, hydrotherapy spa baths, automatic dishwasher machines, laundry machines and more! PDS SpaKling super simple 2 in 1 action effectively cleans and treats the entire system including surfaces, pumps, pipes, jets and drains. It breaks down and dislodges body fat, hair, soap, slime, mould, mildew, algae, organic matter and biological waste. PDS SpaKling protects the health of your guests, ensures your duty of care requirements are met and protects your reputation. The cool part is that it is so safe and easy to use because the product works by simply flushing out the system. PDS SpaKling is working whilst you are servicing the other parts of the room.

  3. FAQs Is PDS SpaKling septic safe? Disinfectants, sanitisers, antimicrobials, and anti-bacterial chemicals in concentrated form can kill the good and necessary microbes in septic systems. However.. it comes down to dilution, time and frequency that the solution enters the tank. It also depends on what else is going into the tank, and when. Because of this, it is really hard for us to make a black and white policy on the subject. The fact is, there are cleaning tasks that require the use of antimicrobials that sometimes go down the drain. Sometimes the sanitiser has already run its race and is no longer effective and sometimes it is still working whilst somewhat weakened. In the case of spa bath flush cleaning, you simply have to do it as part of your duty of care. There is no other good way around it. There are thousands of variables when we think about this subject. So here are two scenarios that will hopefully help you understand chemicals and septic systems. Scenario 1: Spray, scrub and rinse bath and basin surfaces to clean and treat with PDS SpaKling in a domestic environment. The diluted solution is rinsed off the surfaces with water after you have scrubbed them. You are also cleaning the showers and toilets (flushing) within the same 10 minutes with your bathroom cleaner, then cleaning the kitchen and laundry sinks too. Down at the entry to the septic tank, it would be unlikely that you could find ANY trace of quaternary ammonium compound (SpaKling s sanitising raw material.) And if you did, it would go into the large tank and get further diluted to nothing. It won t affect your septic system at all. Scenario 2: Initial Spa Flush Clean & Treatment in a commercial environment. So you would be using 100mL per spa X 2 treatments. In a commercial facility, there is a lot going on that ends up at the entry to the septic tank. You generally have kitchens, washrooms and other things connected to drains all functioning at the same time. But if you were to close up shop at your facility and just do all of your spas at the same time, you would probably knock your septic system around a bit. It is not to say it won t bounce back though because it probably will due to the concentration by the time it is in your tank. We would recommend doing your treatments whilst everything is operating. Spread out the treatments over a week in different rooms at different times. The thing about this scenario is that you don t have a choice. You have a duty of care to flush clean and sanitise your spas after every checkout. Conclusion Clear as mud right? Sorry about that. But at least you know more about the subject and can make better decisions. This next bit goes out to a really good friend of PDS Pete the Poo Man, who is a very passionate septic system technician servicing the Gold Coast hinterland. When you ask septic technicians about antimicrobial based chemicals and septics, their heart races and their face goes red. It is the passion coming up and out! They are generally black and white on the topic which is understandable and actually a really good thing for those who have septic systems. They will always say to never put anything down the drain that kills germs!!! We love to...

  4. banter with Pete on this topic :) But he knows where we are coming from and has done the tests with us. He knows and agrees with us, that dilution is the ultimate solution. This is the answer to the question. FAQ s continued... Why did we choose quaternary ammonium compound as our formula base? Simply put, it works the best in this application. There has been a lot of research and field testing done on the effectiveness of quat and its performance against the likes of sodium hypochlorite (bleach/chlorine) based formulations. The quat does the best job in the application of spas as opposed to disappointing results from sodium hypochlorite. There is also the in use safety concerns of using chlorine based products in the application of cleaning. But it is worth mentioning that not all quats are created equal. And it is a case of you get what you pay for. At PDS, we buy the best raws on the market. The cost is associated with the molecular weight. High grade quat has a lower molecular weight and is more costly to produce but is more effective at soil removal as well as being far more effective as an antimicrobial agent. Want to learn more about the nasties? Here are three of the most common nasties that are making people sick after relaxing in an untreated spa. We have pulled this helpful data out of the Queensland Health Swimming & Spa Pool Water Quality and Operational Guidelines. Thermotolerant (faecal) coliforms or Escherichia coli (E. coli) Thermotolerant coliforms and particularly E. coli are normal inhabitants of the intestinal tract of humans, mammals and birds where they are present in great numbers. The presence of these bacteria is an indication that faecal material has entered the system either accidentally from contaminated skin or deliberately and that there is a risk of gastric illness to bathers from the possible presence of disease causing microorganisms. It also indicates a failure of the treatment process at the time of sampling. Any count of thermotolerant coliforms or E. coli in 100mL is cause for concern and repeat testing is indicated. Pseudomonas aeruginosa The predominant source of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in pools and spas is from infected humans, the surrounding environment can be a source of contamination. It is an inhabitant of drains and biofilms (slimes) and can often colonise filter media. The warm, moist environment on decks, drains, benches and floors provided by spas are ideal environments for its growth. When present in large numbers it can cause ear, eye and skin infections, and particularly folliculitis. Well operated pools and spas should normally not contain Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and its presence may indicate the possible presence of other environmental disease causing microorganisms, such as Legionella, which is of particular concern in spa pools, where it may multiply in the warm environment provided if unchecked. If Pseudomonas aeruginosa is found, repeat testing is recommended.

  5. Staphylococcus aureus Staphylococcus is often found in water when bathers are present and is associated with flaking skin, dandruff and nasal secretions. Its distribution within the water tends to favour the surface. Chlorine sometimes cannot immediately penetrate contaminated particles. Staphylococcus can be further controlled by effective water removal at the surface by skimmers and spill gutters and subsequent filtration. Routine testing for Staphylococcus aureus is not necessary, but testing for it may be included as part of a wider investigation into the quality of the water when a link between health problems and a spa are suspected. In a well operated and maintained pool or spa, Staphylococcus aureus should normally not be detected in 100ml of a properly collected sample.

  6. How to use. Read safety directions before use. Always test first in an inconspicuous area before using any cleaning solution. Play it safe, especially when you use a product for the first time. Better to be safe than sorry. Some surfaces can be sensitive to moisture and particular chemical types. Spa bath - Regular flush treatment Step 1. Fill the spa bath with cold or hot water to 3cm above the jet line. Hot water is preferred but not essential. Step 2. Add 50mL of SpaKling to the water. For larger spas keep in mind you will need approx 50mL per 200 litres of water. Step 3. Turn jets (pump) on and run jets for 5-10 minutes. Foaming will occur which is what you want. Step 4. Turn the jets off and drain bath. Rinse the bath surfaces with water after it is drained. Step 5. Check and clean the spa intake filter for hair and debris. Step 6. Apply diluted SpaKling onto bath and surrounding surfaces via spray or squirt bottle. Wipe off with a clean cloth. Step 7. Polish the bath with clean, dry cloth for a sparkling shine. Apply SpaKling security tape seal. Spa bath - Initial first time flush treatment For the initial clean and treatment, follow steps 1-4 above and then repeat the process again all the way from 1-7. Increase the chemical amount to 100mL and the treatment time to 15-20 minutes. General Cleaning Apply diluted SpaKling onto bath and surrounding surfaces via spray or squirt bottle. Wipe off with a clean cloth. Dishwashing Machine Flush Treatment (Domestic) Step 1. Empty dishwasher including any existing chemicals. Step 2. Add 50mls of SpaKling into the chemical dispenser. Step 3. Run a normal wash program. Step 4. Clean hinges, seals and external surfaces by following the above General Cleaning instructions. Laundry Machine Flush Treatment (Domestic) Step 1. Remove all clothes from machine. Step 2. Add 50mL of SpaKling into chemical holder or machine. Run a complete warm water wash and rinse cycle. Handy tips Start filling the bath immediately. While it s filling you can do your other jobs. Do not use more than the recommended amount Maximum 100mL per 200L of spa bath water. Foaming does occur which floats the crap to the surface for removal. The foam can be quite disgusting so don t freak out. Just stand back and know you have just done a great job and made your customers happy :) Have a special/separate bath plug for spa treatments. Attach a chain to the plug. This is so you can remove the plug without having to put your hand and arm into the feral bath water. Use a faucet hose attached to the tap for the spa rinsing process in Step 4. Much better than jugs! Make sure you communicate to your guests that the spa has been cleaned and sanitised for their health and enjoyment with the PDS SpaKling security seal. Do not mix with any other chemicals. Always wear gloves when handling or using and cleaning chemicals. How to dilute.
