The Lincoln/Douglas Debates addressed the issue of uniformity in local laws and institutions across states, highlighting the complexities of slavery and citizenship equality. Lincoln's opposition to slavery stemmed from its detrimental effects on the nation's reputation and civil liberties. Additionally, Lincoln's plan for Reconstruction emphasized compassionate reconciliation and the return of Southern states to the Union. His Second Inaugural Address focused on unity and divine justice during a tumultuous period in American history.

  1. Lincoln/Douglas Debates Uniformity in the local laws and institutions of the different States is neither possible nor desirable. If uniformity had been adopted when the Government was establish, it must inevitably have been the uniformity of slavery everywhere, or else the uniformity of Negro citizenship and Negro equality everywhere.

  2. Lincoln/Douglas Debates I hate [slavery] because it deprives our republican example of its just influence in the world enables the enemies of free institutions, with plausibility, to taunt us as hypocrites causes the real friend of freedom to doubt our sincerity, and especially because it forces so many really good men amongst ourselves into an open war with eh very fundamental principles of civil liberty criticizing the Declaration of Independence, and insisting that there is no right principle of action but self interest.

  3. Gettysburg Address

  4. 2ndInaugural Address

  5. Lincolns plan for Reconstruction Compassionate reconciliation. Allow the states to return to full status in the nation/national government. Had created four loyal governments in conquered states before war even ended. Many Southern towns and counties had actually remained loyal to the Union during the war, actually voting to secede from their states, the creation of West Virginia being the most prominent example. Lincoln s Second Inaugural Address: Emphasized sameness same bible, God , what if born on other side? Difference the principles were not equal, the cause of freedom was better. God s role: He was in charge, He was doling out punishment, only He could end it.
