Titles of some Religious Leaders Hinduism Guru, Priest Judaism Rabbi Buddhism Guru Christianity Clergyman/woman, Priest, Minister Islam Imam
Leadership Being in charge of a community or organisation Leading members, making decisions and accepting responsibility for a community
What a Leader Needs to Do Listen Influence others Communicate Make decisions Organise Be persuasive Believe in the community and Be inclusive their role in it Have passion and enthusiasm for what they are doing
Authority The power to make decisions, to influence others and have control A reliable source of information A person or group with recognised knowledge about something
A Person with Authority has ... ... the power to make decisions and direct people ... the responsibility to get things done ... the power to influence people ... people s trust because of his or her knowledge
Vocation, Service and Ministry The role of most local religious leaders as head of their community of faith is to serve. Their vocation is a calling to serve Service means serving others. In religion, service can mean serving others and thereby serving God Ministry means performing a role of service to others in a religious community
Organisation and Leadership Hierarchy = an organisation arranged in different levels , one above the other Example: the Roman Catholic Church
Organisation and Leadership in the Church of Ireland The Church of Ireland is a reformed or Protestant church. It is Episcopal, which means that it has bishops It has dioceses led by bishops and parishes led by clergymen and clergywomen It is governed by a Synod, which includes representatives of the clergy, ordinary members and bishops
Different Styles of Leadership and Organisation Some Christian churches are hierarchical some are not Some look to one leader some have more than one leader Some have bishops some don t Some have women leaders some don t Some have no leaders, e.g. Quakers Some leaders are authority figures some are spokespeople for their community
