Realism
In the 19th century realism, the writer looks
at life objectively and is interested in facts
because the aim of the writer is to reflect life
as it is. So, the writer does not take sides
with his/her characters. The emphasis is on
the

character rather than the story.
The

writer deals with contemporary society,
s/he avoids the past or the future.

In literature, naturalism develop out of
realism. The main influences on the
development of naturalism are Darwin’s
biological theories and Comte’s application
of scientific ideas to the study of society.

The writers have some ideas and regard their
novels as laboratories to prove their ideas. For
them, Man cannot be condemned for his action
because his life is controlled by inner and outer
forces (biological, social, economic

In other

 like puppets whose
strings
are
in the hands of outer forces. To prove
these ideas, they choose their subject matter f

lower classes of society and they give every detail
of unhappy and sordid lives of their characters.
