“KNEEL AT THE
CROSS”

Hebrews 7:23-28

Hebrews 7:23-28, KJV
(23-26)

23
And they truly were many priests,
because they were not suffered to continue
by reason of death:
24
 But this man,
because he continueth ever, hath an
unchangeable priesthood.
25
 Wherefore he
is able also to save them to the uttermost
that come unto God by him, seeing he ever
liveth to make intercession for them.
26
 For
such an high priest became us, who is holy,
harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners,
and made higher than the heavens”

2

Hebrews 7:23-28, KJV
(27-28)

27
who does not need daily, as those
high priests, to offer up sacrifices, first
for His own sins and then for the
people’s, for this He did once for all when
He offered up Himself.
28
 For the law
appoints as high priests men who have
weakness, but the word of the oath,
which came after the law, appoints the
Son who has been perfected forever.”

“Kneel at the Cross”

This song encourages us to come to the cross
of Jesus in humble submission, because He
makes intercession for us to God His Father
Both the lyrics and the music were written by
Charles Earnest Moody who was born October
8
th
,1891 near Tilton, Georgia. Moody was the
music director of a local Methodist church after
studying music. He taught singing schools and
led singing at many revivals in various local
churches.
Some sources say this song appears in at least
82 hymnals and is found in our hymnal as well
as others used and published by our brethren.

“Kneel at the Cross”

Stanza # 1

– Tells us that kneeling at the cross
is to
leave our cares
with Him –
Heb. 4:14-16
“Kneel at the cross, Christ will meet you there, He
intercedes for you; Lift up your voice, Leave with
Him your care, And begin life anew.”
The cross is pictured figuratively as the place where
Jesus will meet us, because on the cross is where
He died to make atonement for our sins
Rom. 5:8-11; 1 Cor. 15:1-4; Phil. 2:5-8
We come to the cross, by humbly submitting to
Christ; it is there we can cast all our cares upon Him

1 Pet. 5:6-7
Then, having left our cares and being forgiven of
our sins by Christ, we have a new life –
Rom. 6:3-8

Stanza # 2

– Kneeling at the cross is to be
anchored
to Christ who is sure and steadfast
“Kneel at the cross, There is room for all, Who
would His glory share; Bliss there awaits, Harm can
ne’re befall, Those who are anchored there.”
There is room for all at the cross because God
loves the whole world and His Son willingly tasted
death for every man –
John 3:16; Heb. 2:9
cf. John 14:1-3
For those who come to the cross, spiritual
“harm
can ne’re befall”
because Christ has promised
“they
shall never perish, neither shall any man
pluck them out of my hand”
John 10:27-28

Stanza # 2

– Kneeling at the cross is to be
anchored
to Christ who is sure and steadfast
“Kneel at the cross, There is room for all, Who
would His glory share; Bliss there awaits, Harm can
ne’re befall, Those who are anchored there.”
Therefore, to be recipients of the promise Jesus
made to those who believe on Him, one must
anchor
 their soul to Christ,
“the good Shepard”
who
“giveth His life for the sheep”
and known of
Him. We must faithfully obey Him
– Heb. 6:13-20
John 10:1-14

“…be thou faithful unto death, and I will give
thee a crown of life”
(Rev. 2:10b, KJV).
“Kneel at the Cross”

Stanza # 3

– According to this verse, kneeling
at the cross is
giving up all idols
:
“Kneel at the cross, Give your idols up, Look unto
realms above; Turn not again, To life’s sparkling
cup, Trust always in His love.”
Anything that comes between us and Christ is an
idol, which we must keep ourselves from
1 John 5:21
Rather than looking to idols (even covetousness),
we must
“look unto realms above”
Col. 3:1-5
This will help us to
NOT
 return
“to life’s sparkling
cup”
of sin and pleasure, but to trust in His love,
mercy and grace –
Heb. 10:36-39; 1 John 2:15-17
