  1. Japanese Language Studies for IPLA Students Spring 2021

  2. JLP Placement Test The level of your Japanese Language ability will be determined by the result of the online Placement Test. No retake of the placement test is allowed.

  5. Japanese class numbering system C320 Kanji background 0= No priority 1= Non Kanji background 2= Kanji background IPLA class Comprehensive class 4 credits (2 credits for C500) Level 3 Priority given to IPLA students C320 = Comprehensive class for Level 3 IPLA students

  6. Priority Subjects for IPLA 4 credits Level 1 C120 Level 2 C220 Level 3 C320 Level 4 C420, MM420, PE420 Level 5 C500 (2 credits) and choose 2 credits from the Japanese language classes, culture seminars, and co-learning seminars Level 6 Choose 4 credits from the Japanese language classes, culture seminars, and co-learning seminars

  7. Priority classes for IPLA Whenever possible please take classes that give priority to IPLA students and tell the instructor that you are an IPLA student. If you are unable to take the IPLA Priority classes due to the time zone difference, you can take other Available Subjects instead.

  8. Available Subject All classes have size limits. If a class's limit is exceeded, a lottery is used to select students, and you may not be able to get in. Lottery results are usually announced during or after the first class, so you MUST attend the FIRST class.

  9. RS020 Research Seminar RS020 is a class for IPLA students who want to give their final presentations, one year from now, in Japanese. *Note that this class is for level 4, level 5, and level 6 students and is open for non-IPLA students as well.

  10. Kanji Classes Choose only one class at your designated level, or one level below or above that level. (e.g. If your level is "K2," you can choose K1, K2, or K3.) If the instructor does not give permission, you cannot take the class. Twice a week: 2 credits, Once a week: 1 credit Kanji Level Classes K1 K101 (2 credits) K102 (1 credit) Kanji/Vocabulary 1 K2 K201 (2 credits) K202 (1 credit) Kanji/Vocabulary 2 K3 K300 (2 credits) Kanji/Vocabulary 3 K4 K400 (2 credits) Kanji/Vocabulary 4 K5 K501 (1 credit) K502 (1 credit) Kanji/Vocabulary 5

Japanese Level 1 (Beginner) Target: Level CEFR/JFS A1, JLPT N5 Comprehensive Japanese (4 credits) New IPLA students at this level should take C120: Basic Comprehensive Japanese (Wed. and Fri. 1stand 2nd) Priority Subjects C100: Beginning Comprehensive Japanese (4 credits) Kanji/Vocabulary (1 or 2credits) Subjects Available M100*: Minimal Japanese (2 credits) *starts later in the semester

Japanese Level 2 (Basic) Target: CEFR/JFS A2.1, JLPT N4 Comprehensive Japanese (4 credits) New IPLA students at this level and continuing students who completed C120 can take C220: Basic Comprehensive Japanese (Wed. and Fri. 1stand 2nd) Priority Subjects C200: Basic Comprehensive Japanese(4 credits) Subjects Available Kanji/Vocabulary (1 or 2 credits)

Japanese Level 3 (Pre-Intermediate) Target: CEFR/JFS A2.2, JLPT N3 Comprehensive Japanese (4 credits) C320: Pre-Intermediate Comprehensive Japanese (Wed. and Fri. 1stand 2nd) Priority Subjects L300: Pre-Intermediate Japanese Listening Comprehension S300: Pre-Intermediate Japanese Speaking/Conversation R300: Pre-Intermediate Japanese Reading Comprehension W300: Pre-Intermediate Japanese Writing/Composition Subjects Available (1 credit each) K300: Kanji/Vocabulary (2 credits)

  17. Extra Japanese Classes You may take additional Japanese classes on top of your compulsory classes and earn extra credits, except some exceptional elective classes. You cannot take more than one class with the same alphabet letter (e.g. S310 and S320, R410 and R500). If you choose to take an extra class, but find it unsuitable and decide to drop it, please notify both the class instructor(s) and the IPLA office.

  18. Attendance You are required to attend at least of your classes. If not, you will receive a "D" (fail). If you are absent for two consecutive classes without a good reason, you may get taken off the class list. If possible, notify your class instructor of your absence in advance directly or via a classmate, and try to get any relevant class materials in order to catch up.

  19. Japanese Class Progression System Current Level Conditions to proceed to the next level w/o taking the PT Level 1 & 2 Obtain a C or better in C1/C2. (If you obtain an "AA" or "A" in both C1/C2 and K1/K2, you may proceed to all the classes in the next level)*2 Level 3 & 4 Obtain an "AA" or "A" grade in C3/C4. (or, Obtain more than 3 AA or A grades in Level 3 or 4 courses other than C3 or C4)*1,2 Level 5 Obtain "AA" or "A in both C5 and another Level 5 courses (or, Obtain more than 3 AA or A grades in Level 5 courses other than C5) *1,2 *1 Except the grades of Kanji classes *2 Obtaining 2 B grades is considered equal to obtaining an A
