Injury Treatment We have two full time employees who are trained in athletic training. Treatment sessions will be treated the same way school or practice is handled. Treatment is mandatory. Players that cannot practice cannot play in a game. It is important as a player to do whatever the trainer asks you to do in order to get healthy and get back on the field. Missed treatments, late for treatment, misbehavior during treatment will be disciplined by the coaching staff and result in Opportunity Club. As parents please discuss before you go to your doctor any injury with our trainer, many times this will save you time and money. #WinTheDay

IRON HORSE FOOTBALL MISSION STATEMENT Our mission is to pursue academic and athletic excellence through a high character and high quality football program that is designed to maintain a commitment to a continuing winning legacy on and off the field. #WinTheDay
Our programs commitment will be to develop championship Student- Athletes that will be productive citizens at Philip Simmons High and in our community. Vision Statement Our vision is to develop a comprehensive, player centered, championship football program emphasizing the development of the overall student athlete. The vision is to use our football program as a tool to guide student athletes to become the best version of themselves through hard work, ethical conduct, civic responsibility, academic rigor and intense physical and mental preparation. Paramount to this vision is the mutual respect and open communication among the coaches, players, faculty and staff, parents and officials. Our mission, simply stated, is to all work to become the best version of ourselves and develop a tradition rich football program with championship aspirations on a yearly basis. WIN THE DAY!
Culture of Earning Everything we do is first class, and that includes the facilities, uniforms, and equipment. The players will respect the game of football and the hard work of this coaching staff and realize that they are to earn everything they get. We are not in the business of giving. You have to show up to be seen and you have to perform well to earn. Around here, you earn your playing time. Nothing is really given to anybody. Players that perform well and earn time, if they do a good job, then they get an opportunity to earn more time. If they don t, and other players out perform them, then were going to give the opportunity to the players that performed better. Were not really in the gift-giving department here. This is a competitive situation; everybody knows that. You earn what you get. Bill Belichick Effort- give great effort in the classroom, in the community, and on the field. Accountability- Hold yourself accountable in the classroom, on the field, and in your social life Right- Do what s right at all times. Be disciplined Nourish- the concept of TEAM and Family.
Iron Horse Code of Conduct We want our players to live to higher standards than what is taught in society today. Whether the parent teaches them at home or we teach them here at PSHS, an Iron Horse Football Player will be held to the following code of conduct. Our players should get used to the following: I can always be heard saying PLEASE when asking for something. When given something, I will always say THANK YOU. Likewise when someone says thank you, I will always say YOU RE WELCOME To politely interrupt, I will say EXCUSE ME. I can always be heard saying YES SIR, NO SIR, or YES MA AM, NO MA AM to my parents, family, teachers, coaches, trainers, administrators, etc. Phrases such as : GOOD MORNING, BE SAFE, HOW ARE YOU, and HAVE A GREAT DAY are all part of who I am.
Iron Horse Gentlemen ALL WOMEN IN AND OUT OF THE PROGRAM WILL BE TREATED WITH RESPECT. WE WILL NOT TOLERATE ANYTHING OF THE CONTRARY.
Iron Horse Family You don t graduate from this program. You graduate from Philip Simmons High School. Any player that competes and finishes out his eligibility with us will always be welcomed back and celebrated as part of the Philip Simmons Iron Horse Football Family. #WinTheDay
VARSITY VS JUNIOR VARSITY WE WILL PRACTICE ALL PLAYERS TOGETHER. PLAYERS SAFETY IS STILL OUR #1 PRIORITY: NO PLAYER IN MIDDLE SCHOOL WILL COME IN ANY CONTACT WITH A HIGH SCHOOL AGE PLAYER. JV AND VARSITY ROSTERS WILL BE FLUID AND DECIDED WEEK TO WEEK BASED OFF ABILITY AND INJURY. TIMES FOR PRACTICE WILL MIRROR EACH OTHER. NO NEED TO WORRY ABOUT ONE TEAM BEING DONE BEFORE OR AFTER MONDAY THRU WEDNESDAY. THURSDAY THE JV WILL TAKE PART IN JV GAMES AND WILL BE SEPERATE FRIDAY, JV PLAYERS WILL NOT DRESS, BUT CAN GET IN FREE TO THE GAMES WE HAVE ONE STAFF. WE HAVE ONE STAFF GOAL. WIN THE DAY AND GROW EACH PLAYER TO THEIR MAX POTENTIAL. NO SPOT IS GIVEN IT IS EARNED. LOOK AT YOUR ROSTER SPOT AS SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR AND PAYMENT IS DUE EVERY DAY. #WinTheDay
Practices, Meeting, Games Practices, Meeting, Games All players are required to be at all of the following: pre-season player/parent meeting, all practices, games and team meetings. Absences do affect playing time in practice and in game (excused or unexcused). Appointments, plans, etc. should be scheduled at a time it does not interfere with practice or meetings. We will keep the players from the time school gets out all the way to the end of the game on game night. We will NOT allow players to leave the school for any reasons before the game, unless of course there is an emergency. Excused Absences- family emergency, death in the family, illness, and school sponsored activity- Excused absences should be cleared through the HEAD COACH ASAP. (Excused absences will still be in Opportunity Club for conditioning purposes only, not as punishment.) Unexcused Absence- Player will be put in Opportunity Club and WILL MISS PLAYING TIME in upcoming games; if problem persists, the player will be removed from the team. Not having a ride is not an excuse, arrange with other players or call one of the coaches. Not one kid has ever been turned down for a ride.
SOME KEY TERMS/PHRASES OF OUR PROGRAM ACCOUNTABILITY TEAMS- Player led. Develops pride in what we are doing day in and day out of the offseason. OPPOURTUNITY CLUB- This is not looked at as a punishment, rather the players opportunity to pay back his teammates for any infraction, missed practice, school issue, etc.
Service Over Self Our players will learn the definition of service within our program and outside in our community. We will require all high school level players to participate in community service during a calendar year. We will provide many opportunities to our players and coaches to give back to the community. It is the player s job to participate in numerous events that we provide for our community. Some of the main service projects we will pursue are Book Buddies, work with the Lowcountry Food Bank, Community Clean Up, Event volunteers (School Events, etc.) just to name a few.
RESULTS OVER 800 HOURS OF COMMUNITY SERVICE AND SCHOOL SERVICE HAVE BEEN PERFORMED IN THE LAST YEAR OF THIS PROGRAM! THIS DOES NOT INCLUDING COACHES WHO HAVE COMPLETED HUNDREDS HOURS OF PROJECTS WITH AND WITHOUT THE PLAYERS. #WinTheDay
Communication First and foremost, Head Coach Eric Bendig is the one person who you should communicate issues with in this football program. His cell number is 843-452-2951, office number is 843- 471-2061, and email is bendige@bcsdschools.net. All commination and issues will be filtered down the chain of command as processed by Coach Bendig. Communication between staff, players, and parents, is key to the overall success of the program. As a staff we will try our hardest to communicate schedules, times, changes, etc. to the players and parents. Means of communication will vary; phone calls, emails, website, mailing letters. As coaches we cannot read minds, please keep the staff informed by email or phone with any details relevant to your child and the program. We will work to communicate via Remind, Google, or any other platform that allows for mass communication to the program participants.
Academics Academics are the #1 priority of the TEAM Players are expected to: Be in attendance for all of their classes except for illness, death in a family, or other excused reasons. Be present and on time for their first class of the morning the day after they have had games. Players are not to ever sleep in after games. Be responsible citizens for PSHS. Their conduct in the classroom should always be such that it provides a positive addition to the learning environment of the classroom. Be respectful of teachers. Notify their coach whenever they are getting a D or F in a particular class. Seek help from their classroom teacher either before or after school if they are getting a D or F in a particular class.
Resolving Problems The coaching staff believes that 99% of all problems can be resolved between the player and coach. Players should deal directly with the coach regarding any problems. A time should be set up for the player to meet with the coach privately. Parents should not approach a coach after practice, scrimmages, or games in regards to a problem. An appointment should be set by calling the school secretary and leaving a message and the coach will return your call. You may also email or call the head coach to schedule an appointment. Playing time will not be discussed between parents and coaches remember, this is not a recreation or intramural sport. Amount of playing time will be determined by athletic ability, knowledge of the game, fundamental skill level, attitude, hustle, and the game situation. Please respect the coach s decisions. Football is a team sport and it is our job as coaches to do that we feel is best for the team not individuals. Please support the whole team, not just the team when your son is on the field. There are many players on the roster that may not see action on a regular basis. If the player is unsure of their role, they should be the one who approaches the coach.
Parent Discipline of Off Field Issues At times, parents will be tempted to punish their player for something that is going on outside of football (grades, chores, behavior, etc.) A player that is pulled off or pulled from his team duties will not be allowed back on the team without making up his time in Opportunity Club. If you bench your player for something he did at home, consider that a FULL SEASON suspension as he is missing days with unexcused absences. We highly encourage the parents to bring these matters to the coaches and allow for the parents, coaches, and player to work together to keep your player on the team and not separated from his obligations.
College Recruiting College recruiting is a big part of high school athletics. We will try our hardest to pursue every avenue possible for players to play at a higher level. All high school players are not college players and as high school coaches we have no control over what colleges like or dislike about the player, who/what/when they decide to offer a player, etc. We will provide needed information along with game film and grades to any college coach who shows interest in a player. Understand that ability is only the first part of recruiting, grades and character are a close second. Every college coach asks the following two questions; 1. How are his grades/ will he qualify per the NCAA Clearinghouse? 2. What type of kid is he; good, bad, hard worker, discipline problems? As coaches, we will be honest when those questions are asked, or a dishonest answer can lead to a strained relationship with that college recruiter and program. NCAA Clearinghouse is the final say if a potential athlete is allowed to enroll and be eligible to play collegiate sports. Core GPA, not GPA listed on the transcript, along with the SAT and ACT scores determine eligibility. Freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior grades are calculated for Core GPA. You cannot wait until your junior or senior year to start working on grades. Freshman and sophomore grades and years are extremely important for the player. As coaches, we will advise every player in the program to take the ACT and SAT at least once starting the beginning of their junior year.

Varsity Sports Class PE Credit The goal is to have our entire football program in it for both semesters as long as it fits into academic schedule. Time is used for a four pronged approach to develop our players into championship level people: Study Hall and Tutoring Year long strength and conditioning training Leadership and off season skills development In season preparation and game plan development Bottom line, the class is developed to allow our players a chance to become the best student-athlete #WinTheDay
FUNDRAISING, CONT. One of our big initiatives is to offer businesses and families sponsorship opportunities as well. This will help partner our program with families and businesses in the area and create a mutually beneficial relationship with all parties. We will have these available online and you can always email me for more info. #WinTheDay
