Sensors Sensors Everywhere! IoT by Wire The New Relevance Rob Milks CEO B-LineLogic, Inc.
Rob Milks CEO - B-LineLogic 30 Year Successful Software Exec Started 1stComputer Co at age 17 Led 4 SW Startups to Exit Events Led SLTC to largest IPO on NASDAQ 2000 20+ Years Experience in Logic Engines Expert in IoT, Big Data & Cloud Computing
Sensors Spanning the Globe Smart Sensors create millions of data points per hour. Some can produce megabytes of data per minute. But the relevance and therefore the value is not in the raw data - it's in the insight derived from the data and the decisions & actions taken from that insight. With this much data to process, traditional IT architecture struggles to keep up. Because of these limitations, the true potential of IoT has been held back. Today, IoT is mostly limited to data islands.
How big is it Really? IoT is becoming bigger than the internet itself, right before our very eyes! 40 Billion connected devices by 2020 These connected devices will produce 40 Zettabytes of data/year Big Number: Zettabyte = 1 Billion Terabytes 6 stacks of 128GB iPads reaching from the earth to the moon Undecillion 34x1038 new unique IP addresses to support this Economic impact - $7 Trillion A shame since most of this data is completely irrelevant! People don t really want Big Data, they want Little Data Those few precious golden nuggets that have ALL of the value Not enough! Because without action taken on those insights, they are useless The window of opportunity may only be open for a millisecond So the actions need to be automated like auto-pilot
Easy Hard
Why? - Unfair Advantages Moneyball, a 2011 movie starring Brad Pitt, based on the 2003 book, Moneyball: The art of winning an unfair game. About Billy Beane and the 2003 Oakland A s. They collected stats on everything, but were looking at the wrong thing. Get on base. Nothing else matters . This new relevance changed the game of baseball forever. A huge unfair advantage! Next, a 2007 movie starring Nicholas Cage & Jessica Biel He could see 2 minutes into the future, run all possible scenarios before they happen and take the best action. Now that s an unfair advantage! Now combine the two scenarios and you have a REAL Unfair Advantage!! This is what real-time streaming IoT data can give you; If you have the processing power to take advantage of it.
Prescriptive Action Execution Prescriptive Simulation & Scoring Prescriptive Analytics Predictive Analytics Value Diagnostic Analytics Descriptive Analytics Level of Sophistication
So Whats the Problem? Promised value was never realized! But Why? The sensor companies are not real-time logic processing experts and have not broken the code for: Real-time Data processing Scalability Logic execution Simulation Prediction Automated Actions Machine Learning Who says so? Ex-VP of Strategy for HP Ex-VP of Big Data for Cisco VP of Oracle Cloud VP of Care Innovation (Intel & GE) VP of Solutions for Teradata CEO s at 5 sensor healthcare companies
How proper Processing Technology makes the Difference in IoT Value Choose Carefully! Easy to Do Hard to Do 100 Devices Data rate: less than once per second Store data and query later 5 second latency from source to clients. 100 GB / day processed 3 TB / Month, 40 TB / Year 100,000 Devices Data rate up to 10 times per second Real-time processing on the wire > second latency from source to clients. 100 TB / day processed 3 EB / Month (Exabyte's), 40 EB / Year Scalable to 100 s of CPUs with no bottlenecks. Bottlenecks begin at 4 CPUs. Complex architecture means many potential points of failure Streamlined architecture with few dependencies for performance and reliability
Summary IoT by Wire the new relevance 1. To get maximum value, the data processing paradigm must change! 2. People really want Little Data where the Value is! 3. There is no value realized without Action Execution! 4. Choose your back-end infrastructure Carefully!
