Integration of Cannabis Content in Florida Physical Therapy Curriculums
Examining the incorporation of cannabis-related educational resources in physical therapy and physical therapist assistant curriculums in Florida, this study highlights the need for formal education on medical marijuana. Survey findings reveal the current status and future trends in teaching cannabis content, emphasizing the importance of preparing healthcare students to address patient inquiries and potential benefits of cannabis-based products.

Background Background 62% Pharmacy schools incorporate, 23% more within next year (University of Pittsburgh survey, 2019) 9% medical schools incorporate, 89,5% of residents unprepared to prescribe cannabis, 35% unprepared to answer patient questions (Washington University Study 2017) 75% students in healthcare degrees believe it is important to study cannabis formally (Skjoldahl, Odai & Konin 2019) 38% AT/PT faculty report teaching cannabis in curriculum, 75% with no formal education (David, Farris, Kerr, Rosenthal, Singe, Konin 2021)
Methods Methods > Email invitations to 48 program directors of Florida PT (15) and PTA programs (33) > Qualtrics 23-item questionnaire included closed-ended questions -demographics -quantity of cannabis resources being taught -what specific content is being taught -where is it being taught within the curriculum
Results Results > 10 participants completed (21%) the survey all PT Schools! > 6 of the 10 participants stated that they had not received or completed any training related to cannabis. < 3 of the 10 programs actually teach cannabis-related topics within their curriculum. < 1-2 hours of didactic time devoted to cannabis

Summary Summary State of Florida Physical Therapy programs are only minimally, if at all, including cannabis-education in the formal curriculum. As a result, students enrolled in such programs have limited formal education relative to patient care that involves cannabis, including patient education. No PTA Program responded to this survey
Recommendations Recommendations Given that: -Florida has approved marijuana for medicinal purposes -Hemp-based products (< 0.3% THC) are legally sold over-the-counter -Ballot initiatives include adult-use (recreational) cannabis -Cannabis-related factors are recognized in social determinants of health -Increased focus on efficacy and adverse effects of cannabis use Physical Therapy & Physical Therapist Assistant curriculums have a responsibility to educate students about cannabis in an effort to maintain professional status as a trusted healthcare provider
