Innovative Solution for Sustainable Sanitation in Emergency Camps
Addressing the urgent challenge of sanitation in emergency camps, this solution introduces septic bags as a portable alternative to septic tanks. Developed by BORDA in collaboration with Oxfam and Genap, septic bags offer the same treatment efficiency as traditional tanks, are cost-effective, easy to set up, and environmentally friendly. The prototype has been successfully tested with plans for further field testing, design enhancements, and global distribution.

Septic tanks Pros of Septic Tanks Cons of Septic Tanks in emergency situations Separation of liquid and solids Too bulky to store Containment of feacal sludge Too heavy for airplane transport Not enough resources nor time to construct on-site Prevents contamination of ground water Pre-fabricated septic tanks are available Often no legal permission for permanent installations 13.09.2024

Septic bag Same treatment efficiency as conventional septic tanks Suitable for storage and transport via airplane Set-up within a day by any aid organization Low cost (approximately 1,500 per septic bag) Not affected by legal restrictions as no permanent installation No bad smell Biogas production and use 13.09.2024
