Innovative Semi-Hospital Facility for Elderly Patients
Create a semi-hospital facility within or near hospitals to provide a homely atmosphere for discharged elderly patients. This facility aims to reduce rehospitalization risk, lower hospitalization costs, and improve overall quality of life for patients and caregivers. Expertise in architecture, engineering, and clinical measurements is required to design a comfortable environment with integrated smart systems for early health risk prediction.

THE SOONER, THE BETTER: A FEEL LIKE HOME FACILITY FOR JUST DISCHARGED ELDERLY PATIENTS Chiara Martini EAFIP Workshop Manchester, 24thNovember 2015
CONCEPT create a semi-hospital facility: close or within the hospital in which discharged patients feel like home in which nurses and doctors can easily intervene in case of emergency with daily management costs lower than hospital stay
MOTIVATION ~8% of hospitalized patients are potentially dischargeable but they end up staying in the hospital for different reasons [Lenzi et al. 2014 BMC Health Services Research] Inefficient occupation of hospital beds, increases hospital costs (~1000 /day) Frailty index of elderly increases after 12 days of hospitalization
OBJECTIVES To create a semi-hospital facility emergency care immediately available scheduled medical tests homely atmosphere reduce the length of stay and the risk of rehospitalization lower hospitalization costs provide a safe environment for discharged frail patients improve patients and caregivers quality of life
EXPERTISE REQUIRED Architect Engineer Collect measurements of clinical parameters through non invasive methods develop integrated smart systems able to assess patient health and help clinicians in the early prediction of health risks Clinician design comfortable environment conceal all ICT devices required to empower the patient select patients category define inclusion criteria in the study choose parameters to be monitored
