AD FOR LIVE EVENTS AD is always evolving. No official guidelines.
INNOVATIONS Two innovations in response to perceived deficits in Traditional AD. More technical. Less technical.
PROBLEMS: HEADSETS Uncomfortable. Difficult to use. Socially isolating. Social stigma. Contravene Universal Design.
PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN To be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible, without the need for adaptation or specialized design (Mace, 1976).
INNOVATION. AD headsets replaced with a mobile phone application e.g. Mobile Connect. PSL use their own smartphones & headphones. No additional hardware.
TECHNICAL SET-UP The modulator is replaced by a WiFi access point. The infra-red signal is replaced by WiFi. No need for line of sight . Flexible seating.
EXPERIMENTAL Delay. Battery life. Should improve.
OPEN AD No headphones. Everyone hears the AD.
INTEGRATED AD Inclusive (open and heard by all). Subjective/Non-neutral (word choice and delivery). Considered from the start. Created collaboratively. Similar to Accessible Film-Making (AFM).
TRADITIONAL AD Describer watches the finished production. Aims to deliver one or two AD performances per run.
INTEGRATED AD Access considered from the start. AD delivered by the cast or a character. Or mixed onto the soundtrack. Written by the Describer but with input from the performers.
RECORDED AD FOR LIVE EVENTS Innovative in some countries e.g. the UK. AD is recorded live, during a performance. The vocal delivery has the right pace and expression. A live AD is still offered for PSL who prefer it.
TRADE-OFF AD available at every performance. Fixed AD - no opportunity to improvise or reflect changes in the performance or the reaction of the audience.
READING LIST Unusual applications of AD for live events.
