Was asked to write a hymn poem “
sympathetic
in tone, breathing
tenderness
 in every line; one
that would bring
hope
 to the
hopeless
,
rest
 to
the
weary
, and
downy pillows to dying beds
.”
1912
written in one day—first the words then

Composer’s Song Story

“I had read the story of the
greatest morning in all
history
. Mary had come while it was yet dark unto
the sepulchre, while the dew was still on the roses …
Instantly there unfolded in my mind the scene
in the
garden
of Joseph. Mary sees Jesus and he says,
“Mary”… he speaks and the sound of his voice is so
sweet that the birds hush their singing! Forgotten
are all the heartaches, the long dreary hours … all
the
past blotted out in the presence of the Living
Present and the Eternal Future
.
Grief is gone, tears
are gone, sin and death are something no longer to
dread
the joy we share as we tarry there, none
other has ever known!
I wrote the poem exactly as
it is sung today and completed the music that same
evening.”
