Rainforests play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity and are essential for all living things due to their unique habitats, rich ecosystems, and environmental functions. Understanding the differences between rainforests and woodlands, the variety of animal species they host, seasonal and weather patterns, and geographical locations provides valuable insights into the significance of these ecosystems. Research on rainforest species and categorization, as well as studying the impact of geography on the world, further enhances our knowledge of the importance of rainforests for sustaining life on Earth.

  1. Geography (including Science) Orion Why are rainforests so important for all living things? National curriculum requirement: KS1 understand geographical similarities and differences through studying the human and physical geography of a small area of the United Kingdom, and of a small area in a contrasting non-European country identify seasonal and daily weather patterns in the United Kingdom and the location of rainforests describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals (fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, including pets) identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores KS2 identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic Circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones (including day and night) understand geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the United Kingdom, a region in a European country, and a region within North or South America describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics and based on similarities and differences, including microorganisms, plants and animals Substantive Knowledge:: To know what a rainforest is and how it is different to a woodland in Britain To know about seasons and weather patterns in rainforests and Britain To know about the different types of animals that live in the rainforest To be able to group animals, microorganisms and plants using different criteria To be able to describe the location of the rainforest using lines of latitude and hemispheres.

  2. Long-term overview for Geography Orion Geography: Understanding the features of a rainforest and the impact it has on the world Science: Understanding all living things and their habitats Why are rainforests so important for all living things? What do we know about rainforests and how they are different to woodlands in Britain? What different species of animals live in the rainforest and why? What do we know about seasons and weather patterns in rainforests and in Britian? What groups can we put animals, microorganisms and plants into? What can we tell you about the location of the World s rainforests? Disciplinary Knowledge Research (science) Research the different species of animals, plants and microorganisms found in the rainforest and how to categorise them Research (Geography) Understand the difference between physical and human geography and the impact that these have on the world. Describe, following a study, the similarities and differences of different geographical areas of the world and link to local knowledge.

  3. Orion Knowledge Organiser Subject: Geography Main Learning: Why are rainforests so important for all living things? Key knowledge Vocabulary Dense forest found in tropical areas with lots of rainfall Rainforest Know what a rainforest is and how it is different to woodlands Action of cutting down vast areas of trees Deforestation Know about seasons and weather patterns in the UK and in rainforests A line around the centre of the Earth Equator Name different animals and species that live in the rainforest The usual weather conditions, averaged over many years Climate Group different living things according to their properties Having high levels of moisture in the air Humid Explain why we need rainforests in the world The natural home or environment of an animal or plant Habitat Explain the location of the rainforests in the world Prior Knowledge 3
